I found a set that my grandfather carried for years...According to my father through two world wars. I remember seeing them when I was little, but didn't know what they where used for. Anyway I was cleaning them up, and thinking about him. Anybody's parent or grandparnet have them as well?

I have a couple of uncles who carried them like I carry a pocket knife.

Different times back then.

But you can't clean under your fingernails or sharpen a pencil with brass knuckles.

Brass knuckles are considered "prohibited offensive weapons" in my state. Talk about bass ackwards laws. I could carry a Glock 18 with a couple of 33 round magazines legally, but if I have brass knuckles, a switchblade, a black jack or leather sap I can go to jail. It's perfectly O.K. to cut someone in half with a machinegun while defending yourself, but don't break their jaw with brass knuckles.

A roll of quarters works a lot like brass knuckles, but won't get you hassled by the man.

But knuckles offer protection to the hand.....and you don't end up with the last two fingers broke if you hit wrong.

In my state Brass Knuckles, actually any metal knuckles are bookable as a felony but typically prosecuted as a misdemeanor. simple possession is illegal.

Yet illegal CCW is only a misdemeanor.

Two thirds of what used to be in my mother's purse.  She didn't have the stick.

She had several saps.  One was about 18" long and had a long strip of spring metal.  Very pretty, in a way.  Nice stitching.  I am not sure that any of the old companies that made the machinery for stitching leather that way are still around.

Years ago she was mugged, well, a mugging was attempted, and she was just able to get the sap out on the way down and used it to get on top of the mugger.  When the cops arrived just a few minutes later she had kicked most of the guy's teeth out and he was semi-conscious.  Popping him in the head with the sap gave her enough of an edge that she was able to come out on top.

They really, really make an impression -- like you were just hit with a log.
