OK, my 20yo daughter in college erroneously claimed herself on her 1040EZ form and so my return was rejected when I tried to claim her as a dependent. This gained her $26 but lost me $850. As I understand it we need to amend her return to not claim herself as a dependent with a 1040X form, then I can submit forms which claim her. She already received her refund, and by re-doing her 1040EZ I can see that the difference in refund is $26 that needs to be returned to the IRS for her refund. What I can't figure out is how to get this $26 difference on the 1040X. The last lines of the 1040X are very confusing and unclear and don't appear to allow for a return of too much refund. Anybody else do this i.e. need to amend and return some of the refund with the 1040X? or am I using the wrong form? |

This: answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080318105318AAXzFys is helping (re: exemptions line 25 of page 2 of 1040X). I may be able to get there. What a complicated joke our tax system is. Those responsible should be in Hell. |
