I got some virus or malware that I could not get rid of with my antivirus(trendmicro) or any other method I used, adaware, etc.  So Its been a whileand i decided to just start over and format the HD and reinstall the OS.  All my important stuff is backed up on a slave drive so Im good to go.  But The HD was partitioned into two drives, F and C using the NTFS thingy.  I was running XP but it was an upgrade from 98..  So I try to format the F side and it says something about dismounting the drive and it would have to be forced so I formatted the C side forst figuring it would be easier.  So then I try to format the F side an I get the same message about a dismaount and would I want to forcable dismount.  So I select yes and proceed.  Then nothing happens.  I try again, same thing.  So then i start from a safe mode and it restrs using the old OS.  So I try to format from there but it says the drive I specified(F) was invalid.  So I restart and not only get a blank screen with the following message:

Invaid system disk
Replace the disk and press any key.

So I insert my XP disk and it goes thru some stuff and finally I get a BSoD stating I need to restart because the system shut down and was unable to proceed and that if trying again is unsuccessful to call the vendor or some bullshit.  All I need to do is format the rest of the HD and start over but I cant get to a DOS prompt screen to do it and it didnt work the last time.  Everything I do brings me back to the BSoD with the above message or the Invalid disk message.

Now what?

Looks like I screwed up by not using the XP utility and deleting the drive partition first and formating using the DOS screen rather than the utility provided.  So now what can I do?

Maybe I could remove the HD and set it as a slave and connect it to my laptop and fix it that way?  Can I use the laptop's 1394 port top connect?

You can install the drive as a slave on another PC and try it that way, or you can download the Ultimate Boot CD and boot from it.  It has tons of disk utilities.

ETA:  Watch out for ads that look like part of the page.

If you can boot to the CD go to a dos prompt and type:   fdisk and then delete all partitions, reboot the system and you should then be able to install correctly and repartition in the XP install

Welp, none of that worked.  the ultimate boot disk, I made a 98, an XP and a NTFS disk.  None worked.

Probably just easier to buy a ne HD and start over..  I burned the downloads to a cd and none of them worked.  I dont have a floppy drive in my laptop to try that route.

Fuckit a new HD is less than $100, I dont have the time pr patience to dick with it..

Any more suggestions before i bore a hole thru the HD to make it so the data is gone?

Why not just pull out the slave drive with all the data, and make sure your BIOS can see your OS drive first?
If your bios can see the drive then you should be able to run the windows setup against it.

After XP is install, just re-attach your slave drive.

So you say disconnect the slave drive?  Okay then what?

Make sure your the drive you want to install windows on is seen under the Mboard's bios.

After that, you should be able to boot off of your XP cd and install to the drive.

I got it.  I forgot I had an old HD with XP running on it so I swapped it out with my back up drive, set it as the master, set the fucked up drive to slave and went right to it.  Thank god I save shit, I was getting impatient.  Should be all set in a few hours. Thanks guys..
