There are plenty of crappy boats out there. Always look for rot in the stringers. When the hull is molded, great pains are taken to ensure everything is sealed against water intrusion. Unfortunately for many manufacturers, the next stop in the manufacturing process sends the hull to be fitted with the engine and other mechanical components, where many holes are drilled, and passages are created. Many are not properly re-sealed. Storing a boat in a garage helps immensly, as does a dry climate, but eventually most boats will get stored outside. Expensive glass boats are probably sealed well, and metal boats are obvously immune to this problem. Boston whalers are also immune as they don't use wooden stringers. There are plenty of older boats out there with wet sawdust for stringers. |
