Police, Man in Standoff on Bridge Connecting New Jersey and Pennsylvania

A man has barricaded himself away from police in the westbound lanes of the Walt Whitman Bridge, connecting Philadelphia to New Jersey.

Unconfirmed reports indicate a baby may be in the vehicle, and that man is armed with a bat.

The incident started as a police pursuit after an unknown motor vehicle violation near Interstate 76 in Bellmawr, N.J.

When New Jersey State Police called off the chase, the man continued over the bridge, stopped, got out of the vehicle and started smashing all the windows.

The guy is armed with a bat. wtf?

Police Standoff Closes Walt Whitman Bridge

GLOUCESTER, N.J. -- The Walt Whitman Bridge is shut down in both directions Thursday afternoon due to a police standoff.

The situation began prior to 4:30 p.m., closing the span between Gloucester, N.J., and Philadelphia, according to both the New Jersey Department of Transportation and the Delaware River Port Authority.

Chopper 10 is over the scene showing police on either side of a white sport-utility vehicle, which appeared to have a New Jersey tag, its flashers on and both front doors open for some time. It remained stopped in the center, westbound lane, and the doors later closed.

Delaware River Port Authority spokeswoman Danielle Hunter said the man has a woman and a baby with him in a white SUV. Hunter said he is armed with a gun and a bat.

According to New Jersey State Police, there was a pursuit going from New Jersey toward Pennsylvania that ended at the Walt Whitman. The port authority is handling the situation on the bridge.

NBC 10's Ted Greenberg reported that, according to New Jersey State Police, troopers were attempting to stop the vehicle for a speeding infraction when the pursuit began.

Sources told NBC 10 that a man in the vehicle is threatening to jump.

State police have a negotiating team on the scene.

After 5 p.m., Chopper 10 showed police taking motorists out of their vehicles and walking them down the bridge. A large number of people were grouped at the base of the bridge's New Jersey side, behind a police vehicle.

An ambulance headed up the 11,981-foot, seven-lane-wide span and toward the standoff scene at about 5:15 p.m.

The U.S. Coast Guard told NBC 10 that it has a vessel staged in the Delaware River below the bridge in case anyone is thrown or jumps.

Standoff with armed man blocks traffic on Walt Whitman Bridge

An armed man is in a standoff with police that has blocked traffic on the Walt Whitman Bridge, a major span between Philadelphia and New Jersey.

The man has a woman and a baby with him in a sport utility vehicle, said Delaware River Port Authority spokeswoman Danelle Hunter, and is believed to be armed with a baseball bat and a gun.

Television footage of the standoff showed what appeared to be a white Cadillac Escalade with at least one door slightly ajar sitting at a standstill on one side of the bridge.

Opposite the SUV, on the other side of a barrier separating the lanes of traffic, three law enforcement officials could be seen crouched behind a police car.

The bridge carries Interstate 76 over the Delaware River between south Philadelphia and Gloucester City. The bridge has been shut down since about 4:30 p.m.

New Jersey state police say they pursued the man onto the bridge. Capt. Al Della Fave of the New Jersey State Police said troopers tried to stop the vehicle for a minor speeding violation, but the driver of the SUV failed to stop.

"We called off the pursuit after a few minutes because he was driving erratically, and we didn't want anyone to get hurt," Della Fave said.

State police alerted other law enforcement authorities to the speeding SUV.

I just drove under it.

Trucker driver that was at the front said he reached in the back of his waistband but never brandished anything.
