What the hell is jacketed soft point ammo?

Edit: Can it be used in auto-loading rifles? (the ammo in question is .223)

Thanks!

It is a thin jacket of copper (usually) that holds a lead core. The lead is exposed at the tip.

to answer your edit, yes it can. My uncle uses it in his ar-15 because the range he goes to doesn't allow fmj.

Jacketed Soft Point (JSP) usually functions fine in semi-autos, but the lead tip can get battered and deformed.  That would degrade accuracy, but not significantly if you are just popping caps at the range.  If you load a magazine, then shoot it empty, no probs.  If you load a magazine, shoot it half-empty, top it off, then repeat for a while, eventually, the rounds in the bottom of the mag will have flattened noses, from bumping against the front of the magazine on recoil.  They probably will make it up the feed ramp and into the chamber when their turn finally comes, but maybe not.

When cleaning the rifle, you also need to check the feed ramp(s) for lead smears, and clean it off before it becomes a problem.
