Which of the two scenarios do you believe criminals fit into? Scenario 1: A criminal is truly determined to commit a violent crime and will do so regardless of whether or not the victims are armed. In this scenario, the victim has no control over the commencement of the crime. They have only the option to carry or not carry. Or Scenario 2: A criminal will change their mind about proceeding if they see armed resistance before beginning. Most criminals aren't idiots. They want to obtain something illegally (whether possessions, sex, or someone's life), but more importantly they want to get it EASILY. They may decide not to go through with their plan if the situation is not to their liking. Your "run of the mill" criminal does not want to die that day. Some do, but they are the exception rather then the rule. |
| The correct answer is GET BOTH. There most certainly are criminals who go out with the direct intention of commiting a violent act, come hell or high water. There are, however, more criminals who want things the easy way, and would be deterred by the thought of a victim fighting back effectively. |
