I heard on the news that they plan on mothballing the shuttle fleet in 2010 or so. What are they going to replace it with?

Actually, several public and private craft will proabally end up replacing its functions.

The Orion is to take us beyond earth orbit, it is a replacement for Apollo, not really one for the shuttle.

Yes, but it is much larger and designed to travel in deep space.  For that, wings are a parasitic burden.

But it still reminds me of the human warhead strategy. But this pursuit is inherently dangerous anyway you cut it.
