Going thru the pantry clearing out old stuff I found a few cans of salmon that are more than a year old --possibly two old, unlike say condensed milk or veggies that have a use by/good till/best by date ther is no indication of when it might go bad...............how long is this stuff good for ?? and before the "try it and dibs on your gear" responses the wife has already laid claim to it.

Most of those "use before" dates are time limits on optimum flavor.

It lasts a LONG time!  The stuff I was buying last year says best by 2013.  The stuff on the shelf this year still has the same date.  I have loads of it, I love it!

As long as the cans are undamaged/undeformed they should be fine.  Luckily, when you open it, your nose will tell you whether they are OK or not!

These things will last for a very long time.  Open a can and find out; you'll know quickly.  If you are unable to tell, try giving some of the salmon to a dog or a cat.  Their noses are far more sensitive than ours.  If they turn up their noses at it and won't eat it, then you know it's bad.

This is my understanding as well.  There isn't much middle ground on this.  If it's bad....whooboy...its bad.

I like the idea of the pet test too...then again...dogs have been known to eat poop.

When I had cats, I'd give them a piece of any deli meat that I thought was questionable.  If they wouldn't eat it, I'd know it was bad.  If the meat was good, they'd snap it right up and want seconds.
