 Holy fuck!

I come home from work and have my 1911 cocked and locked in a fobus. My grandson asks me about it so I show him what cocked and locked is.

I show him the grip safety and tell him it can't fire unless that is depressed. I held it sideways and touched the trigger with my finger.

"see? BOOM!!" it was pointed in a safe direction, thank almighty God. It put a hole thru my wifes cuboard about an inch from the floor.

I can't get it to drop the hammer when empty without depressing the grip safety, but it sure as hell went off with out holding it down. I wasn't even touching it!

Scared the shit out of me. I wish I still drank right now, I'd fucking tie one on.
I'm gonna go take a pain pill.

What a fucking dumb ass!!! NEVER AGIAN!!

It's possible for the grip safety to get 'stuck' in the depressed position. Exceedingly rare, but possible.

Do I even have to say you should have unloaded and went outside before making said demonstration?

I'm curious...what kind of 1911 is it and are there any modifications done to the gun?

This is why in my CCW course, we were taught that safetys are merely extra devices that can FAIL like yours just did.

Glad your okay, but just be more careful.  I have one 1911 thats pretty iffy when it comes to the grip safety.

RULE I: ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

RULE II: NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO DESTROY

RULE III: KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

RULE IV: BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

Sadly you appear to have violated all four at once.

Thank god nobody got hurt. (Or Allah depending on your beliefs )

I've always practiced no weapons handling unless empty, but got busted last Christams showing an AR to a friend after I had removed the mag. Hard to be perfect, but we should all try our best.

Never bet your (or others') life on a mechanical safety.

The Four Rules of Firearms Handling
by Jeff Cooper

Rule 1
ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED
The only exception to this occurs when you have a firearm in your hands and you have personally unloaded it for checking. As soon as you put it down, Rule 1 applies again.

Rule 2
NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY
You may not wish to destroy it, but you must be clear in your mind that you are quite ready to if you let that muzzle cover the target. To allow a firearm to point at another human being is a deadly threat, and should always be treated as such.

Rule 3
KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET
This we call the Golden Rule because its violation is responsible for about 80 percent of the firearms disasters we read about.

Rule 4
BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
You never shoot at anything until you have positively identified it. You never fire at a shadow, or a sound, or a suspected presence. You shoot only when you know absolutely what you are shooting at and what is beyond it.

Thanks for reminding me why I would never carry a 1911 for CCW  ....maybe a para DA, but nothing Cock'd & Lock'd.  Don't rely on anything to stop the trigger/hammer from working as designed

Glock FTW

Actually, I think cocked and locked 1911s are the safest handguns to carry (when done properly).

I'm glad nobody was injured.

You have to simultaneously violate at least TWO of the safe handling rules for a disaster to occur.

Kudos to you for your muzzle control.  Please work on trigger discipline and that "every gun is always loaded" thing.

This the argument I used when I sold firearms and people complained about Glocks and other handguns not having safeties.  The first damn thing many people do is believe the safety is a lifesaver and then proceed to finger bang the damn thing loaded.  Don't even touch the fucking trigger if its loaded.

I don't understand, why did you try this with a LOADED firearm? Why would you pull the trigger on ANY loaded firearm, especially with the safety off if one didn't want it to go off?

ND, and I'm damn glad you and your Grandson are OK. I also hope you didn't turn him off to firearms for life.
