I know a young Marine that has successfully completed both Recon and Scout/Sniper School- I know both courses are very demanding- Question to the AR15 users in the know- What percentage of the corps would have completed both schools? Any guess on the number of current Marines having graduated from both. To all of you having served our country- THANKS |
| Probably not more than 5%. Scout sniper school is the easier of the 2 to get into. Considering that Recon is comparitively small (unit size) the number of school seats are limited. I was active duty infantry (0351) and if you weren't part of STA, you weren't getting Scout Sniper school. Going to Recon school was just subject matter for wet dreams. |

Both schools are a lot easier to get now. back in 1999 they started to garuntee recon indoc in your enlistment contract. It didnt make you a recon Marine but it saved you a place at the indoc. fail and you were given a combat arms MOS at the needs of the Marine Corps. Also dont forget the difference between Blt Recon and Force, Force has restructured to play ball with SOCOM so there is some upheaval there. I wouldnt say SS was the easier of the 2 to get into, yes, the PT standards werent as tough but no pizza boxes or iron crosses were allowed into the party, plus GT scores were looked at. Ive seen some serious dumbasses go to ARS. a lot of snipers go to ARS as well. it's kind of like ranger school in that. If your friend is really a sniper with recon he probably went to ARS first, then got a slot for sniper school. both schools have really spun up since 9/11 so I may be a little out of touch but i know "division school" has been cranking out shooters for the last 6 or 7 years. I couldnt guess the number but you figure each infantry Blt will normally have a recon plt and a SS plt. sometimes it's a STA plt. might not be different but it used to be. Then you have consider if you want to include guys who have moved on in their careers. assload of staff NCO REMFs who used to be recon or SS that wanted to lat move into something technical to set themselves up for a job. a lot of former recon and SS guys in the reserves too. we had a former-03 mafia in my reserve airwing unit. a lot of "dual cool" and SS guys who moved home, joined the reserves and now fuck up SRBs in the S-1 shop, or work comms, or career planners, or anything else they can OJT. I couldnt guess the percentage but it's a lot more than you realize. |
