I thinking about getting a new computer and am leaning towards a Compaq Presario 5000. I found one on their website that has an AMD 1.3 ghz processor, 80 gig hard drive, 512mb ram, dvd rom, cdrw, and 17" monitor for $1,000. It's just for home use (internet, spreadsheets, word proc.) so I really don't need a top of the line machine and figure this may be the one.

I've used Compaqs before at work and have never had a problem, but have never used one of their Presario models. Any opinions on them or Compaq in general?

You'd do better with a Dell.  I know people that work(ed) at Compaq and they wouldn't own one if they actually had to pay for it.

Thanks Don_R. I must have missed that thread. And after reading it, I think I'll just keep what I have and upgrade the OS to 2000 or XP.

I love mine, haven't had one single problem with it in nearly two years but then I know what I'm doing.

I got all the bells and whisles - DVD, CD-RW, nVidia AGP GeForce video, five channel surround sound, NIC card... runs great.
