Do I have to plug my wire less computer into my router to set up the security?

Yes. You need to hardwire your computer into the wireless router (access point) to setup your router's security.

can't you just access it by typing in the things IP address on your internet browser? that is what i did, i didn't have to connect a cat 5

By design most of the SOHO AP/Routers are designed with a requirement of physical connection for setting up the security. If they didn't - as soon you plugged the thing in somebody could connect and lock you out of your own hardware.
