I here that the Dane's had it turned up to goose catching speed, but it broke.

Windmill loses it.

The failure blade was going over the top when it failed.

Interesting.  I would guess that the generator set had a catastrophic failure and seized.  The resulting torque stress on the shaft caused the entire assembly to detonate.

Very strange...

It was blowing apart as it was going up but I couldn't tell if it touched the tower first or not.

Glock windmill.

ETA:

SBG,  I see you're from NE too.   Ever been to the wind generation plant up by Ainsworth?   There are miles and miles of windmills like that up there, it's pretty neat.

High storm winds caused an overspeed.  It was known that this would happen, because the braking mechanism had failed and apparently could not be serviced.
It was expected, so there was a bunch of people camped out, waiting and filming.

I am out by Scottsbluff, but I am originally from Omaha.  I have neevr been up to the Ainsworth area yet, but I did just see a large wind farm in SE Minnesota just east of Brookings.

When you said windmills and destruction, THIS is what came to mind.

Actually, it looks like it failed at about the 8:30 position.  It then looks the the blade in the 5:00 position struck the tower due to unbalanced loading.  Quite spectacular, though.

I'll accept that.  I tried a few dozen times to find the exact breaking point, and 90 degrees later is the best I could get.

I was wondering why it was on film.

+1

They put a single blade on display at the Minnesota State Fair, and I couldn't believe how huge even the blade alone was. These things are MASSIVE.

Not impressed

When I was in the orchard bussiness we used wind machines in the spring to prevent frost damage.  They were powered by Big Blocks 390,429,454,460's.

One night the neighbors machine lost a blade because the hub broke.

One blade went about 150+yrds and the other right into the tower and hit the engine.

When I was in Tulsa, I had the good fortune of seeing a three truck convoy, with one blade per truck.
I got all giddy at the sight.

Yup.  I saw about 20 blades on a train the other day.  2 rail cars per blade and each blade laying on its edge was taller than the boxcars.

I wonder how much power it was generating at the last moment?
