I'm on break at work here and outside the window I'm watching a trainload of dozens upon dozens of M1 Abrams roll west. It's sweet to watch. Where do you think they're going? Were they refitted/repaired? |
Dunno. Are they going toward or away from a port? Interestingly, the biggest limitation on our MBT's size is train tunnels. |
I heard something about the army trying to get all their tanks up to the M1A2 version. |
| Saw an interesting show on discovery/military/science channel (cant remember) that showed how they do overhauls on the abrams. It was really cool. They literally tear it all the way down to just a an empty hull. Every last nut and bolt is removed before they sand blast it and put it all back together. |
ah well, I was thinking we sold them to the Saudi's
|
Nice red X... |
Damn! DOn't you hate it when they do that? |
|
| If I were guessing, it's probably a mech unit from the East Coast or NE being moved to Ft. Irwin, CA for training at the NTC. Narrowing that down, it would probably be an element of the 42nd ID, 28th ID or perhaps the 38th ID if they still use tanks. That's my best guess. |
|
A lot of Guard units are upgrading from M1A1s to M1A1 AIMs. I believe WA has already upgraded, CA certainly did a few months ago. Could be an MT or ID based unit, assuming you're in IA. They won't be heading for Egypt, the Egyptians have their own production line. NTM |
Possibly, shipping out of Pt. Hueneme? Depends on where the ships are. But between you me and the fencepost NTC, Ft. Hood, Pendleton are more likely destinations. |
ding ding ding! more than likely we have a winner. anybody in a mechanized unit knows all about railhead details loading everything to be shipped to Ft irwin, CA for NTC rotations. ours went on the flatbeds at Benning, and returned to the same spot, allowing for thousands of conspiracy theories to evolve during both directions of their cross country voyage. it happens every month, to a different unit. the same with JRTC in louisiana.
yeah, im thinking if it was top secret G6 stuff then they would at least have tarps on them. watch the discovery channel special on NTC, they filmed it while my unit was there. it shows it in detail. |
Marines go to the Army tank school. After that, they train wherever their unit is. 1st Tanks 29 Palms CA, 2nd Tanks Camp Lejeune. Edit: As for the destination of those tanks, I vote NTC out by Barstow. |
The Marines go through tank training at Ft Knox also. My son completed Army Cav Scout OSUT at Ft Knox a few months ago. India Troop, 5-15 Cav was next door to the Marine tanker barracks. He said the Marine tankers were "undisciplined fatasses" compared to the Cav Scouts but the boy was always prone to hyperbole so I don't know. |
Yup, I was a Marine Corps tanker, trained at Knox. Nothing like being a Marine stationed at an Army base ![]() Anyone catch that GI Factory show? They showed old Abrams being rebuilt into new ones, very cool. I believe the export M1s are not identical to the versions we use. No DU armor, something like that. I did see an interesting variant at Knox back in 1992, it had rectangular slabs of extra armor attached to the outside of the turret. The guys in the building said it was for export, but you never know. |
