Anyone know of a decent forum for unlocking cell phones?  I'm going to be doing some travelling to other countries soon and I'd like to unlock an old phone and use a local sim card.

Just make sure it's a quad-band GSM phone.

i have to motorola v66i's that i got from t mobile,
i switched back and forth between germany and the states with em for 4 years, they never even needed to be unlocked, jst switch the chips, set the bands and go

i believe that on quite a few they are never locked to begin with, they just don't tell you that.

You could send it to me and I can unlock it . Try howardforums.com, it's the arfcom of the cellphone world. Some places will do it for 7.99, and I wouldn't pay any more then that unless it's an iphone.

Quite a few are locked, not many are unlocked. A good way to tell if a phone's unlocked is to see the box. If the box is manufacturer branded "motorola" or "Nokia", then it's unlocked. Otherwise, it's probably locked.

Hold down * and # while turning the phone on. That will get you into boot loader mode. there might be a software unlock for it. Read the OS number to me.

If you are a T-Mobile customer, and have been for more than 1 year (which it sounds like you have), you can call them and they will provide you with an unlock code for your phone.
