I'm trying to find a book, and I forget the title.  Thsi books was big with a lot of SCCA people back in the mid 90's.  It follows a guy who gets into road racing as a mechanic in the 1950's.  I remember the big car in the book was a Cadillac powered Allard.

Any ideas?

Boy did that ring a memory bell.

I was thinking "Missile Man" which was a fiction book about a kid who was a hot rodder with an Allard who ended up in the AF shooting BOMARCs.  Had a scene on the bus to Boot Camp, where the recruiter talked about going to "Processing" and the black kid on the bus said, "Processing? processing? That's what my Daddy does to hogs at the plant."  Which was about the only memorable part of the book

I found it, it's called "The Last Open Road."  I was off in the release date (1998), and racetrack, but I stumbled on it, and now it's on my list.
