I am freaking stumped here, guys...I'm a newb at this stuff, but in the past I have made sig pics and worked out the correct dimensions for them, but for some reason I cant figure out how to cut the latest one down to a "19.5 KB" limit, for use on another forum... Anyone want to give me a tutorial or direct me to a resource on sizing? I appreciate any help. Crpdeth |
Easiest method is to change the image mode from RGB to Index color, use whatever scheme gives you the best color conversion, and save the file as a .gif instead of .jpg. That will REALLY reduce your file size, should work great. |

Thank you for responding, Sir...I'll look for that option, but I'm like you, I really don't think that option is here unless it is pretty well hidden. I've read through the only book I have on hand and am looking around on-line, I wont give up, but this is frustrating. Thanks again... Crpdeth |

Wooo Hooo! I just changed it to GIF and it went through without a hitch...While saving, it changed it to a "copy" what ever that means, because I already had lots of copies in JPG form that didn't change it in that way, also it said that it was forced to B&W, but upon opening the folder it was color. Thank you guys very much...I should have come here before spending all that time reading and trying to figure it out on my own. I'm sure I'll spend more time with this program now. Crpdeth |

You might take a look at the Jasc (Now Corel) the poor man's Photoshop.I have used each of the versions for years and lots of auto things in it that are simple and you do not need all the windows and complexities of PS.I own all versions up to the newest X3 and you can run install them all on a computer at the same time and use each one as you want by just deleting the program starts from the start menu by dragging each out on the desktop and click on it to open for use. They also work on Vista back to the 7.0 version first one I got and still use the most |

Download the FREE Irfanview (www.irfanview.com/). Open your image with it and do File/Save As, select JPEG, and set the jpeg quality setting to a lower value. Don't use GIF. The quality of your image will suffer greatly. Sometimes the photo itself limits the size it can be reduced and still maintain acceptable quality, for instane a photo of something on camo or a heavily textured background like grass, carpet, etc. If that's the case, then all you can do is scale the image to something smaller in terms of height and width. |
Some forums have file restrictions great enough that even the lowest .jpg setting will not reduce the file size enough. .gif with adaptive color conversion will produce a perfectly normal looking color palette and still give you a small file that will fly on almost any forum software. Some forums will convert a .jpg to .gif anyway, so your argument is moot. As to a .gif making the image suffer, you're generalizing and in some cases a .jpg will look worse. All depends on the settings. Take a look at this original photo: If I resave that file with the lowest .jpg quality settings, I get this: ![]() However, instead of reducing the compression I use adaptive index color conversion and resave it as a .gif, here's the result: ![]() All three have the same resolution, but the .gif is actually superior to the lowest jpg setting. In this instance, the file size isn't smaller with the .gif because adaptive on a large scale won't take it down enough to be effective, whereas on a 75x75 image it more than likely will be lower than even the lowest .jpg setting. |
