Everything evolves.  Sometimes to the point of self extinction.

Other times, something bigger and better comes along.  Darwinism.

Will the owners get tired of it, and sell it?
Will they retire and pull the plug?
Or will the Government step in and try to regulate it?

Will Cerberus buy it?

It has been here more than 10 years, which is an eternity for internet forums.

I'm very impressed with how well this website is run.
Cudos to Ed and everyone involved.

Can it last another decade?  Considering how much the internet has changed
from 10 years ago, I can't imagine what we will see in the next 10 years.

Short of World War 3, some major legislative changes or someone buying the site, ARFCOM is going to be here for a while.    Hell, back during World War II, this site used to be called www.m1garand.com.  This site is older than Al Gore.

I was here not long after AR15 started.  It sure has changed a lot.  Some not so good, but most are much better.  It was much more "neighborly" back in the beginning.

With the number of dedicated, diehard users we have (many of which who panick when the site goes down for only 5 minutes), I can't ever see it going away. Things will no doubt change at some point. The focus of the forum may switch from AR rifles to something else eventually (the next service rifle if we are lucky enough to still be able to buy a civilian copy then). But I think it will remain around in some similar form for quite a while.

The word is scheduled to end sometime around 2012, we still have at least 4 more years of posters with less then 100 post talking about their time in the SAS/Navy Seals

It'll be around as long as laws permit, as long as there is money with which to run the site and as long as the Avilas choose to keep it running.  It really comes down to that.  The interest in civilian versions of military weapons has been with humanity for hundreds of years and sure isn't going to go anywhere anytime soon.

That was good.
I think the site will be around as long as it is profitable. That will most likely be quite some time (barring any large-scale disasters or wars).

Just imagine the old-time threads !

  • 9mm vs .45 (wait, we still do that)

  • Bolt action vs semi auto

  • 8mm Mauser vs. .30-'06

  • The "tactical use" of stripper clips

  • All German and Japanese bashing threads end in a lock with bans

  • The Japanese: should we nuke them ?

  • Which should I buy: BAR or Thompson ? (get both)

I beleive it has evolved and through the help of staff and mods, it will continue to do so. I beleive it will stay as long as Ed Sr. wants it to. Which I of course hope is for a LOOOOOONG time.....

Im sure they are going to try to regulate how guns are sold online, I think the .gov with try to stop or limit our EE on gun sales, even though all of them are legal either FTF or FFL transfers.

You young whipper-snappers dont remember it before the board was re-done and everyones posts were returned to zero........the FIRST time.

Why back in the day it was called 1903 . com and we were constantly at odds with the Krag lovin die-hards and the Mauser boys were screaming "RIP-OFF" everytime ya turned around.......Ol Woody Wilson claimin HE was the one who started the internet.

Teddy Roosevelt posted here once in awhile and usually got into trouble when the mods would get tired of his racist African Safari threads or Irish immigrant jokes.

And that dang Groucho.......his antics were legend...HELL ..you couldnt click on a link without getting "Tommy Dorsey Rolled"!...too bad the search stops at the Pearl Harbor bombing.....12-7 was a busy day here indeed....epic threads abound.
