What brand of watch do you recommend? I'm looking for a high quality dress watch and also an all around casual style watch. I already have some basic Timex watches that I really like, and Seiko but it's time to upgrade. |
+1 on Tag Heuer |
| If you are going to spend $$$, buy a Sinn. I personally don't have the cashflow to justify a watch that nice, but if you do and are more concerned with function than having a better known recognizable name (Rolex, Omega, Patek Phillippe) then buy a Sinn. If the Sinn watches don't do it for you, you cannot go wrong with an Omega Speedmaster or Seamaster. |
-1 one on Tag Most Tags are a cheap quartz movement in an overpriced housing. Get a real watch (autowinders like Omega, Breitling or Rolex) or save your money and get a Seiko or Citizen. |
| If I were to upgrade from my Seiko, it would be a Breguet. My Grandfather had one, given to him by his father. He passed it on to my uncle, who passed it to my cousin who sold it to buy meth. I remember that watch very well, and would love to have one of my own. |
![]() Invicta 8926. Currently $99 on Amazon, and they throw in a 5 year warranty. Japanese automatic movement, and built like an Abrams. Positive reviews are all over the internet, including this one. I've had mine for about 4 months, and wish I had gotten it sooner. |

+1 on the Omega Seamaster. There are dressier versions and full-on dive versions. Whatever watch you pick, get one with a sapphire crystal and antireflective coating. Imagine a watch crystal that doesn't scratch unless you really screw up and always looks amazing. If you're more into pilots watches than dive styles, check out Fortis and Sinn. Also, pmwf.com (poor man's watch forum) will show you a lot that you don't have to pay 3K for. |
I have a friend who collects Invicta's. Some are great, others are good and some plain suck. Just depends on who is assembling them. He was given one by his work crew for Christmas. He has taken it back 3 times and finally exchanged it for a new one. Personally, I like them, but like most things, you can get a bad one every once in a while. |
Yeah, TAGs are overpriced, but I like 'em. And as for the movements, ETA makes something like 95% of the quartz movements in all watches, regardless of brand. I betcha your quartz Omega has the same ETA movement my TAG has. |
I wouldn't get a quartz Omega. That's why I suggested a Seiko or Citizen if he wants a quartz watch. |

If you want a knock around watch of better quality, get an Atomic Solar G-Shock. They come in dozens of styles. This is the G-Shock flagship: ![]() You can get them for less than $300. Less than $200 from some places. You could also get an Oceanus 5 movement that has the same basic movement, in a much dressier and more expensive case. It is downright beautiful and I would own one in a heartbeat if I could afford it. See? I have this watch currently: ![]() It costed me about $55. It is easy to find for less than $100. |

I got this while in St. Martin. I paid much less than MSRP, but even at MSRP, it is a great watch. Weighs just a few ounces and is indestructible (Titanium). Citizen Titanium I saw this watch while in the islands, but couldn't find it at a decent price. I found the US Distributor and made him an offer which he accepted. Again, I paid much less than MSRP. I love the Sapphire crystal. Scratchproof. Zodiac Swiss Made |
Timex quality has gone downhill recently. They are the same price they were 15 years ago. Great, but the batteries only last 2 years, the finishes scratch off in less than 6 months, 25M Water resistent watches get busted and fill with water, etc. They aren't the Timexes I grew up with. I made the switch to Casio G-Shock for relatively inexpensive and durable watches last year. I wish I did 10 years ago. It would have saved me loads of money on disappointing timex watches. |
