A bit of wisdom from my Dad who is new to the interwebs.

Me.  "Dad, you know that there is 3x more oil in Alaska then in the Middle East."

Dad.  "Yep."

Me.  "You did?"

Dad.  "Thats why we buy all we can from the Saudies."

Me.  ""

Dad.  "We are just going to buy it all up and when it's gone that part of the world will dry up and blow away.  Thats what happens when your entire Country is living off of a single export.  By the time Alaska is out of oil we will be using nuke plants again, or cold fusion, or solar."

Me.  "Hmm..."

That is some smart thinking

There is a lot of oil in Alaska (and you should relentlessly press your Congresscritters to approve drilling for it) but nowhere as much as in Saudi Arabia.

This has been my attitude for awhile now.  It's a speculative play.

Hold our long position in the Gulf and in Alaska.

I agree to a point.  We should use the threat of drilling there to get the Saudis to produce more and lower the price.

The Saudis don't have any spare capacity, they're probably already beyond their optimum extraction rate, Ghawar is about tapped.

This is there problem.  They are spending more GDP each year but are already maxed on how much they can pump.

Solution.  Charge more for the same amount of oil.

Is it me or do the numbers not add up to your speculation?

Middle East has hundreds of billions and Alaska has between 600 million and 9.5 billion?

That's not 3 times as much.

roy d...just saying

ONLY 12% OF OUR OIL COMES FROM THE MIDDLE EAST IN TOTAL
2/2/2008 11:24:03 PM EDT
[#10]
Yeah, 12%, but that doesn't really matter much because the oil market is global and whatever capacity we hold back  has to come from somewhere else.

The north sea is basically tapped so now Britain is dependent, europe depends on middle east and Russian fuels, China...

I agree there isn't nearly that much oil in Alaska, and we need to drill it soon because the existing pipelines necessary to make ANWR viable have a limited lifespan.

It doesn't really matter where "our" oil comes from anyway.  All the oil pumped out of the ground is part of the supply for the global market.

Correct - I was just correcting the 'buy it from the Saudis' comment...
