so i have never taken my firearm with me while flying somewhere I leave Saturday to fly to Vegas how do i go about this must i call ahead or just show up with my bags and gun case? do i just tell the sky cap i have a firearm in my checked luggage and he will take me to the counter when they will check everything and take my checked bags? can ammo be in the same case as the weapon? thanks in advance |
I prefer to fly with a quality airline. |

It has to be in a locked hardcase, but they will make you open so they can take a look. I'm not sure about ammo. I've never used a skycab, I just go to the counter inside. When you're checking your bags, just tell them one is a gun, and they'll send you (with your hardcase) to someone else after giving you your tickets and tagging your bags. Good thing about checking a gun when flying, if someone sees you standing in line with a rifle case, you're probably being moved to the front of the line. No waiting!

okie i found out about the firearms on the airlines website and i can bring 11lbs of AMMO

Just be sure to secure it in its holster so it doesn't fall out while you flap your arms Seriously, it's very easy to do, just follow the steps mentioned above about the lockable case, lock, etc. I flew from TX to FL then back and never even had an ounce of OMG!!! As a side note, I took one of my cheaper back up pistols instead of my Kimber due to not wanting to have that luggage disapear. |

I have heard that ammo needs to be in a separate piece of luggage than the firearm. It also cannot be in a magazine. It has to be in the original packaging or a case designed to hold ammunition. What airline are you flying on and are you taking a pistol or long gun? FWI- I have flown out of Orlando to Regan National (Virgina/DC) Baltimore and Philly with firearms and never had a problem. Philly was the worst, but it still wasn't that bad. |

Here's the TSA directions. I'd also check out your particular airline's procedures, but they're usually inline with TSA. I keep a copy of TSA guidelines PRINTED OUT and in my briefcase when I travel in case I come across a clueless TSA person or airline employee. |
 The longest it has taken me to check my luggage with firearm (in a hard sided, locked case) was 5 minutes. I've taken my firearm on dozens of flights. |
That happened to me in Baltimore. It was a pistol and I had to tell them, but when they ask if there are any special circumstances- kids in strollers, handicapped, etc- tell them you need to declare a firearm. |
