the Daisy powerline series is a good choice. i started out with a red ryder, ended up with a powerline 880 when i got older. mine still shoots, but the mechanism that holds the pump handle into place is worn out. its lasted probally 10 years though, and i used it ALOT!

Yep, if he takes care of it, he can give it to HIS son.

Yeah they are Great gun. Powerful too, which can also be limited to the # of pumps.

ETA: it will actualy last unlike some of the newer plastic junk that will break in a month.

My first BB gun was a Daisy Red Ryder. I still have it and it will go to my kids some day.

Check out Compasseco.com

You can get a TechForce 15 youth spring powered rifle for about 30 bucks.

It shoots at about 400fps. Not bad for one cock of the barrel.

I've bought about 15 different TechForce rifles from low power to high powered .22s over the last couple of years and I'm very happy with them. Very good rifles for the money.

Yep. I've still got mine that I bought from an old lady down the street from me when I was NINE! She had 2 of them leaning up against the trunk of her tree during a garage sale. I was walking to a friends house and saw them. I asked what she was asking for them and she goes:"For you,2 bucks apiece." I was. I told her: I'll be right back!" I ran home and asked my Mom for 2 dollars 'cause this old lady was selling these "toy" guns down the street. I bought one,my friend bought the other. They are the Sheridan "Silver Streak" in .20cal(5mm). After all these years I finally need to send it back for worn out seals!
I've been through countless other airguns and rifles, but the Sheridan is the only one I've still got left from my youth.
Oh,and at the time, the ONLY place that carried those pellets was Western Auto. Back when they used to sell real guns and ammo! Are they even still around?

For Christmas I gave my four year old a Daisy Buck, it's the beginners version of the Red Ryder - he'll be shooting it again tomorrow.

I have a Smithsonian Condition 1939 Daisy Model 25 pump action with wood furniture  (Known as the "King of the BB Guns") and recomend one from the 70's or 80's for your son !

Daisy Red Ryder is a good first BB gun.  Then step up to a Sheridan.  My Sheridan Blue Steak is at least 35 years old and still works great!

I still have my 760. Got it for Christmas when I was 11 (I think). I am now almost 49 years old and it still runs great.

Had one of those in 1971 (1200.00 seems a bit steep) seen them for FAR LESS unless it's NIB and even then $250.00 seems more like it ...  But that is a perfict starter BB gun IMHO!

You should get him the Gamo Recon, Single pump, break barrel about 550fps, looks cool, tactial look with thumb hole stock, dead on at 25 yards comes with a cheap scope from cabelas on sale now.  177 cal single shot. My son is 8 and has one and named his Reco , wish I would have had one like that when I was a kid.

The only downside to the Sheridan is the strength required to pump the gun.  The one I bought takes a great deal of force to pump to the maximum of eight pumps.  Granted, with this gun, one or two pumps will get the job done.  As a teenager, I remember a single pump pushing a .22 pellet through the fence - An amazing feat at the time when compared to the air rifles owned by my friends.

Sadly, it's sitting in the garage right now with a missing rear sight and rotted seals due to neglect.  I have no doubt that it can be fixed...  I just haven't gotten around to looking into it.

On a side note, the .22 version will readily accept the plastic, shot-filled "bullets" that have been pried out of CCI .22lr or .22WMR shot shells.  The results are much better with the Sheridan, oddly enough.  The CCIs seem to be loaded fairly anemically in comparison to what the Sheridan is capable of.

Carefully place the projectile in backwards as to not drop any of the loose shot down the barrel, and guide it down with a cleaning rod.  The Plastic casing acts as the wad, holding the shot together as it exits the barrel.

13 My 8 year old daughter already has a youth 10/22, her old Henry mini-bolt, and a 28 gauge Franchi 48 AL and I'm thinking about a .243 for her ninth birthday. I've been starting mine at 4 with a Daisy 105 Buck and some time after 5 (when they are ready) they get a Henry Mini-bolt.

If it's his first gun you can't go wrong with a Benjamin Sheridan but at that age don't let him develop any bad habits.

Why get a 13 year old a BB gun?  Get him a bolt action .22.  Guns aren't toys, a 13 year old can only get in trouble with a BB gun,UNLESS it is treated as a real gun.  So just get him a real gun.

A Red Ryder is perfectly good for plinking cans. I got my first one when I was 8 or so with my dad. We had to keep it at his office because my mother was in a 'no toy guns' kick at the time. Good times.

At thirteen I'd figure I would want something a little stronger then the Ryder. A good one will probably cost 60 or 70 bucks. On his birthday take him to a sporting goods store or, if you must, Walmart and help him pick one out. It'll be the highlight of the day, I'm sure.

i wouldnt recomend  the Daisy 880's . I have one from 1982 and bought 2 more at Christmas. Well one son bought the other a 880. Bought it on sale for 18.99. No way would I pay the 40.00 they usually go for. It's no going going to stand up to the shooting the  one from 82 did.
