I need a new pair of boot laces.  for some reason I seem to go through them like crazy.
I've tried a few different kinds:  cheapo ones that came with the boots, heavy duty ones from the shoe store, leather laces... but I still haven't found anything that seems to work well.

I googled, and they do make kevlar bootlaces, has anyone tried these?  do they work very well?
any other ideas would be good.

Try using 550 (parachute) cord. You can buy it at any military surplus store or on-line. I used it when I was in the Air Force and it worked great.

All you have to remember to do is burn the ends so they won't fray or unravel

550 cord comes in all colors

Let me know how you do.

that's a great idea, thanks.  I was planning on hitting the surplus store tomorrow anyway.

I use 550 cord on my work boots and it works great.  If you buy it in bulk (there are many many other uses) it is more cost effective than boot laces.

Do you use a lighter to seal the ends or do you use some other method?

Lighter works.

Also, OP try buying a pair of boots with a side zip.  I haven't tied my boots in over a year.

yeah...
I paid quite a bit for these boots, and they are pretty damn comfortable, I think I'll hang on to them for a while.

I was just hoping I wasn't going to have to resort to going to the hardware store and buying some braided steel wire to use as laces

Definitely seal the ends if you're using 550.

Leather has worked better for me long-term (non-operator, low-speed, high-drag, woodlands environment).

keep multiple spares though!  (lots of 550)

Side-zip jump-boots are great if youre on ******

Good Luck!

I go to the surplus store and get what they sell as "Paratrooper laces."  They are strong enough to hang a truck from.  They are not cheap, but they LAST.

A big #1, 550 cord rocks as boot lacing. You can use just the outer covering without the core strands by itself for sport shoe laces. They last and last.
