What color was the wood pre-stain? Did it already have the redish tint that is evident in it?

it did.  And the forearm grip.  I sawed and sanded it off.  Although you can't really tell, I also baked Colt grey gunkoat onto the upper and lower receiver in my grill, which kind of worried me because it appears a little of the loctite oozed out of the rivet holes
