Today I bought a Champion Sport series safe and I'm having issues with the lock.

The lock is a S+G dial type lock, where you dial it counterclockwise 4 times, clockwise 3 times, etc.

I'm only getting the safe open every 3 or 4 times I attempt it. I'm manipulating the dial exactly as specified, stopping exactly on the number every time. The lock feels like it only "catches" every 3 or 4 times, if you know what I mean.

If you have a dial type lock on your safe, is this normal?

TIA.

No. I have 3 with dials and the only time they don't open is if I fuck up my "spin count"...

Try one # off in either direction on the second #.

One of my safes was doinf the same thing and using 34 instead of 35 makes it open every time.

i'm pretty sure he means a sargent and greenleaf.

and +1 to the being off on a number.

for the longest time i thought one of my safe numbers was 86, when it would work about half the time.   foolish me, i should have known it IS 87!

I have a Fort Knox with a S&G dial, works great, just don't hit it one number off.
My cousin has a safe with the same dial and he sometimes has to do his combo
two or three times to get it to work.

Unless your combo is off, you've got a problem with the wheelpack & it's only going to get worse. Call the dealer ASAP & tell them what's going on. If you can easily return the safe & they will allow it, do that.

If not, unless they repair safes, they will want you to call a safe smith to come out to solve the problem. After you pay the safe smith, present the bill to the dealer for re-imbursement. Don't shut & lock it because a lockout situation could occur.

I used to repair safe heads and have seen quite a few problems with wheelpacks. Most problems were because the brass wheelpacks were old, dry (no lube) & just plain worn-out. Some occurred because of owner negligence/abuse. Obviously since your safe is new, if it is a wheelpack problem, it's because of a screw-up during manufacture or installation.

Spin the dial in the opposite direction of your first number direction a few times to reset it.

Good point-----------I didn't think of that.

Also don't "fling the shit" out of the dial. My oldest safe is 18yr's old and I've yet to have any problems with the dial. I've seen quite a few people here have their lock screw up due to "massive" spinning...

+1 to the turn slowly and carefully.

It only takes another few seconds to do it right. Abusing it by spinning the dial too quickly may lead to unwanted problems down the line.

+1 on resetting dial.  I have a Champion Victory series safe.  When you get to the last number are you then turning clockwise till it stops?

I tried this and it worked well, I'm up to a 75% success rate now.

I hope the remaining 25% is me

Thanks for the responses.

Mine started doing that to me. I pulled the back panel off and sprayed the hell out of it with CLP (Breakfree.)

The improvement was amazing. It never misses now.
