...how will you know? I live in the Washington D.C. metro area. I was in D.C. on 9/11/2001 and there was absolutely no information from the Federal/State/Local governments. Anything you found out was through listening to the news reports and have been skeptical about emergency broadcasting tests on the tv and radio ever since. Here is a scenario for you: a nuclear weapon is detonated somewhere along the D.C./N.Y./Boston corridor. The EMP messes up your car and your radios, the radiation in the atmosphere interferes with radio and tv transmission signals. So, there you are, with your thumb in your butt, knowing something has happened, but since you don't know what, you don't know how to react. The SHHTF and you are clueless, your BOB in your BOV isn't going anywhere. How prepared are you now? |

EMP will not effect you unless there is a big ass shockwave about to incinerate you and pulverize you. Besides I'm well enough away in MS. Even if town town Jackson took a hit, we ae staying put. Any terrorist nuke is going to be really, really, really small. That said, buy a police scanner and a shortwave radio. |
|
And I'll doubt you will be able to listen to the radio if an EMP killed your car. Maybe if you had a crystal radio, but no one would be transmitting. I would assume if everyones car died, I couldn't get anything electrical to turn on, and if I had a crystal radio it didn't pick up anything, an EMP had been set off in the area. That is reason enough for me to make my way to home and hold down the fort. I would expect looting, murder, rape, etc. Now if I had an old diesel vehicle, I would load it up and get the hell out of Dodge. |
EMP's are set off with nuclear expolosions, you'd be dead or close to it - bigger problems to worry about. |
Just check for the posting on ARFCOM ![]() ARFCOM knows all and sees all
|
You do not need a close detonation for the EMP to work. You detonate a nuke in space and the effects will still fuck up shit on the ground. |
Not necessarily. There are EMP bombs that can take out about 20 square miles, no radioactive material needed. Those would likely to be set off near regional power stations for maximum effect. |
You speak de troof. |
That is no joke... ARFCOM always scoops the MSM. |
Source and Link. Because I'm calling

a shortwave radio, batteries, stored in a farady cage farady cage instructions |
Popular Mechanics article and Wikipedia entry. The EMP would only take out a radius of 2.5 miles for the example I gave. ETA: Edited grammer. |
Theory only. Show a prototype weapon fielded or tested by ANYONE. |
US Military in Iraq has been reported to use similar devices in 1991 and 2003. |
![]() They used payload delivery warheads that dropped metal debris (thing big ass chaff) on power substations that connected lines with a metal conductor and this cause the grid to short. No magic EMP was used. |
|
The EMP wouldn't take out your car unless you were extremely close(under 10 miles) But if you were in those 10 miles. Or if i was anyways, i'd be getting my gun out if my car and radio weren't working...that's the looters field day..no cops, no radio, nothing. i'd be cocked locked and ready to rock. |
Against what, fall out? |
Looters and such. They have a field day...and steal all your shit cause they know they won't get caught...or they think they won't. |
30 seconds after a nuclear bomb you are expecting looters? Keep your weapon discrete and get home. You'll only see looters after a few hours. You are more likely to run across first responders if running down the interstate away from a nuclear blast than looters. |
Watch Future Weapons they had an episode on this very thing. Hand held units exist I saw it on the show. If they can make grenade size ones then they can make bigger ones. |
