Given the proximity of Kenya to Sudan and the history of US embassy bombing, I wonder what “radical Islam” involvement is in the current distress, especially the burning if 50 people in a church (I think it was an Assembly of God church). Yes, I understand the whole tribal thing is a long standing issue, but just speculating that anarchy is a condition “radial islam” would like to generate and capitalize on… I have seen nothing in the news about this posibility. |

There are islamists in Kenya, and then there are radical islamists. The embassy bombings were carried out by Al Queda cells, not indigenous muslim Kenyans. Most of the muslim population is centered around the coast (Mombasa, Lamu, etc.) and, to a lesser degree, Nairobi. Kisumu (where the church burning occurred) is not know to have a large islamic population. The violence you are seeing in the news today is tribal violence rather than religious. Attacking gatherings of impoverished Kenyans doesn't seem like something that would be a priority for AQ and other groups. I'm honestly surprised it made the news since so much of what goes on in East Africa goes unreported in the States. |
Because it's not a possibility... The violence is clearly political... The opposition candidate lost, and he is doing what all 3rd-world losers do - inciting his supporters to riot... Suggesting that Islam is involved, would be like suggesting that Islam was involved in the Oberon (Sp) riots in Mexico after their Presidential election... Islam is NOT the cause of all of the world's problems... |
try watching BBC news. when I am in the states I find it hard to find out what is going on in the rest of the world from CNN, FOX and the like, it seems the networks don't think people want to see stories from outside the US. Nick |
No problem, man. Once it settles back down don't hesitate to visit and go on safari if you can. Kenya is a great place to visit. If you go, spend some time in Mombasa, then tour the game parks at Voy and Amboseli. If you really want an adventure fly down to Moshi, Tanzania. Check out Kilimanjaro, then hire a tour out to Ngorongoro Crater. I've never been more amazed by a place in my life. Try to pick up a bit of Swahili if you go. It's really easier than Spanish. |

Jambo... I loved Africa. There you can see people who have nothing act so happy and not a care in the world. They are sitting on a gold mine in tourisim in most of the countries...if they just backed off the corruption and made people feel safe, had good police..etc. On the flip side of that, you can see people who have nothing act like savages. ETA: Didn't Kenya just lay the smack down on some Islamist Jihadi's last spring...didn't we help with some AC-130's support?...against the Skinnies up north? |
+1 Britney Spears' arrest will be smeared all over the news this weekend with maybe a 10 second blurb about what's happening in Africa. Media has really turned to tabloids. |
Is this what you were thinking of? news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7155868.stm |
