I recently received an SKS over the Christmas holiday which had a shitty folding stock on it. I ordered a replacement stock that was too tight which kept the safety from disengaging. After sanding the inside of the stock, the trigger group worked fine.

My question is do I need to add a protective finish to the wood inside of the stock? I don't really care about the looks since it is inside of the stock. I just need to know if I need to add anything to protect the wood.

probably would be a good idea, although i don't know that it's "necessary."

On a precision bolt action, or something you intend to abuse in the elements, it is necessary to seal the inside channel of a wood stock to prevent swelling and eventual cracking due to the moisture that the open grain would absorb.

If it's just a plinker, it's not a big deal.

But a couple coats of Johnson's paste floor wax wouldn't hurt.  Or some polyethylene wood finish would do the trick as well.

Thats the thing I'm worried about. I just want something that is durable, cheap, and easy to use..... much like the SKS.

get some spray polyurethane and spray the inside of the stock with multiple coats allowing each coat to dry before applying the next.

Should seal the wood from the elements just fine.

cheap and easy.

In this case, this is the best route IMO.
