| If a business puts up a stop sign in there parking lot for various reasons. Is that a "legal" stop sign? |
Doesn't happen to be at a car lot does it? Some local fartknockers put up a stop sign at their exit/entrance that says "STOP" in the red octagon, then in little letters below it says "and see our manager for your free gift!" I just drove by. |

Can also be made effective by City Ordinance. And in any case, if you decide it is an infringement on your freedoms and drive by it like you did the door checker and run into somebody, it's very much likely that you will be on the losing end in the insurance world and in the event of any resulting civil litigation. (even if it has no force of law) |

Traffic control is primarily a regulatory scheme intended to facilitate smooth and safe integration of motor vehilces. If you recieve a ticket for running a stop sign, you have not committed a "crime," rather you have violated a public safety ordinance. You will not recived the process one recives one recives if accused of a crime because the stakes are fairly low. The incentives for you to obey the "stop" sign should be two fold (1) to avoid colliding with other vehilces and (2) to avoid a ticket. I suggest that reason one is far more compelling than reason two. So if the question is can you get a ticket for running the stop sign I would say that it depends; there may be a city ordinance that allows the business to coordinate with the police to give you a ticket, but maybe not. That would take some specific research into your specific jurisdiction. On the other hand if you ran the "stop" sign and where in an accident, one could reasonably beleive that you were at greater fault for the accident. |
