Long story short; my son got a video iPod for Christmas and it will play MPEG4 movies. I used ULEAD to compress a movie for him and it played well, but the damn program is SO SLLOOWW it took all night to compress a single movie to the iPod format (I'm running a Conroe Dual Core with a Raptor HD, so CPU speed is not the issue.)

Anyway, is there another program like RipIt4Me/DVDShrink that will compress video for iPods? Can DVDShrink be used for iPods?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've used Videora for converting .avi's to mp4, if that's what you're asking.  About a year ago I gave up on full-length movies because of audio/video sync problems, but they may have fixed that by now.

Handbrake

Takes about as long as the movie is.

+1

Use the preset for iPod/iPhone; it's perfect.  It does take a couple hours to compress the video, though.

I use DVD shrink and it takes a little less than the movie play time.

+1 for handbrake, takes about 10min on my quad xeon. I hesitate posting that b/c I don't want this to turn into a pissing match just that it's good software. My older athlon machine would take about 1.5 hours and my old dual g4 mac would be about an hour.
