My computer almost bit the dust a few days ago and now I need to reinstall microsoft word, PP, excel. When I go to install it the computer says "another installation is currently in process". I'm not installing anything else. How do I get rid of this problem?

You need to delete the registry entries for those programs.
1) back up the registry first (or in XP, just create a restore point).
2) using regedit (go to [start]->[run]-> then type in "regedit") search the registry for any instances of the individual program file names, such as "winword.exe", "powerpnt.exe", "excel.exe" and so on. Delete all these entries.
3) I also like to delete the program filename associations, to make sure they get put in correct. Using regedit, look in the "hkey_classes_root" folder, find the file types for each of these programs (.doc, .xls and .ppt) and delete those folders too.

After you reboot, you should be able to re-run the installers for the programs.

reboot before trying any of the above.

also try uninstalling the previous installations by going to control panel ... add remove programs.

after doing that try what floppy said.

I think you are fucked. If you got such a problems with MS Office, that usually means that you need to reinstall Windows. MS Office is a "self healing" software, and if it gives you that kind of shit, your best bet to back up and start fresh.

I'm always serious, the internet IS serious business.

And personally,I take offense at your accusation of my un-seriousness.

Click start, go to All Programs, Startup folder, delete the MS Office install line in there. Sometimes if a install isnt complete when you shut down, MSO puts a line in there to restart the install.

Several times I've had to run the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility in order to remove the remnants of some previous office installation that didn't get fully removed and now won't let you reinstall.  The file is msicuu2.exe and I've since started to install it on all my systems ahead of time because sooner or later I'm gonna need it.  Basically you select the program from a list and it quickly wipes out all the registry entries associated with it.
