I know this question belongs in the armory section, but I am hopeing that it will get a better response here.

I have a Marlin lever action 45-70 guide gun with the 18" ported barrell. One of my friends hunted with this gun this past weekend and decided that he wants to buy one for himself.

He called me today saying that he had been to several gun shops in the area, and that all of the Marlin Guide Guns he looked at did not have the ported barrell. I looked on Marlin's website and noticed that the ported barrell is not mentioned anywhere on the website.

Does marlin still offer the ported barrell as a factory option?  Also, how much of a difference does having the ported barrell make as far as recoil and follow up shots make? (I have never shot one with out a ported barrell)

Thanks

Why would you want a ported barrel?

All the newer Guide Guns I've seen are not ported.  As far as I know, porting isn't available anymore period.

I wouldn't want a ported one.  I sold mine.  Hated it.  Would like to have a new one without porting though or something similiar.

A .45-70 with an 18" barrel is gonna be pretty fuckin' loud, ported or not.

You aint kidding, one day at the range the guy next to me let go with his, and I knew right away what it was, even though I'd never seen or heard one before.

Check out this web site    http://www.brockmansrifles.com/glossary.asp    He makes the best custom brakes for 45-70 on the market. And glove loop levers

If he wants it to be ported he can send it off to the Magna-Port company up in Michigan.  IIRC it costs about $70.

Talk about loud, I shot my ported 14" .45/70 T/C Contender without my ear plugs & it felt like I had ice picks stuck in my ears!

Marlin dropped the factory porting years ago, about the same time they quit drilling and tapping for the side mount sights (Lyman and Williams) this all happened shortly after the stainless guns were introduced, there are a few stainless ported guns but not many. I have one of each, the porting is a non issue, the ported gun gives up a few foot per second, the ported gun has less muzzle jump and either will blind you when fired in non daylight hours . I favor my ported gun because I like the blued better than stainless, its got a lot of miles on it and the more it gets the better it looks, this one has the side mounted Williams Aperature with a rather large flourescent front blade (it is somewhat imprecise but very very quick to get on with.. If you want a ported gun and can't find one get up with me, I can probably find you 10 of them by noon tomorrow, the damn things are all over the place (with good reason) in this area.
