About 1 out of every 135 Americans is in prison RIGHT NOW.

Never realized there were quite that many people imprisoned currently. About 2.2 million people according to the most recent data I found.

I would find it interesting to know how many ARF'ers have ever done hard time.

I heard an interesting statistic one time that said 10% of the population is considered to have genius intelligence, and that 63% of the prison population has genius level intelligence.

If they're so smart, how did they end up in prison?

Something I heard one time, it could be complete crap.

My mother has worked as a psychologist for a state pen for several years. She says most of the inmates are definately smarter than any of the guards.

I thought that the average inmates IQ was like 85-90? Substantially lower than the average population...

I heard that 73.7 %  of all statistics are made up.

Intelligence-wise the prison population is full of people who deviate a great deal from the norm.

There are lots of sub-80 IQs in prison and a lot of 140+ IQs too.

Those numbers are completely bogus unless they're using 140 for "genius", as I've seen quite often recently.

ETC-140 is TWO standard deviations above the mean, 1% of the population in the US, it used to be a lot more common and is in other parts of the world, like Japan.

Genius is 160. Geniuses are very rare, tend to have extreme social or other problems, and yes often end up in jail.

People of average intelligence tend to be better at getting a 9 to 5 and watching football and finding that satisfying...

The mean IQ of incarcerated yoots is around 79.   The adult mean is probably a little higher with a small fraction of the population with high IQs.  Their full time job is to scheme all day every day, so as a group they are able devise and accumulate roles and cons to perpetrate on the naive.  I'd bet the vast majority of the higher IQs are sociopaths and who, by nature, will eventually screw up big time. Look at Bill Clinton.

Add to that number the ones who are on parole, waiting to be sentenced,  haven't been caught yet, ex-cons planning the next crime, and you've most likely got another 20 or 30 million. We need tent cites in every state.

That makes sense.

I can't imagine someone of really high intelligence working too long as a tool for the prison industry.

I can see someone with high intelligence winding up in prison because they don't fit in with society. Imagine having an IQ of 150 and having an idiot for a boss. A situation like that early in their adult life could help send them towards a life of crime so they can control their own fate if you will.
