the home I just bought runs entirely on electric, I am thinking about getting a genny to power the hvac a few light and the fridge.

Where do I start it's got me to the point of calling a contractor to help me with deciding but I know they are out to make money what do I need to know so im not taken for a sucker?

For permanent backup power - Generac

For portable power - Anything Honda

The one thing that will determine the size you need is whether you want to run the air conditioning, and then whether you want to power 100% of the house without AC.

If you can survive with fans or go to the basement, then you don't need a monster generator.

This is important not only for the up front cost, but the cost to run the generator.  A large generator will use enough fuel to take your breath away.

Make sure you estimate your maximum power needs accurately.  I only have experience with portables.  I know in portables that the Honda engines are without a doubt the best. I've got two now.

Just went a week without power and used a generator for the whole house.  It was a Black Max from Sams.  Has 13hp Honda GX390 engine.  Worked very well.  I do have gas heat though.
