I was asking my Dad about the fishing conditions in our tank in Texas. The tank level dropped to about nothing during the drought and refilled. He went out fishing today to see how it was for me. The tank was stocked with bass, perch, and catfish. He says he's catching some sort of hybrid perch/bass. Have any of you all heard anything, seen anything like that before? All I can picture from his description is a small mouth bass. I have no pics, yet.  Sorry. Would they be good to eat?

Tank = Pond in Texas. Bass and perch cannot interbreed as they are of different species. And you won't find smallmouth in a tank in Texas. But when you say perch, do you mean a true perch (walleye, sauger) or do you refer to a crappie as "white perch" as many in the south are wont to do. |
I doubt he is catching "hybrids". Probably crappie or perch, but maybe some Texas ciclids found their way in. Taste wise, all are good (for freshwater fish). Any chance rain/high water this last summer found it's way into the tank? That would explain the "new" fish. |

Black bass and "perch", or "bream" or "bluegill" are all "sunfish". I don't doubt they can accidentally spawn in the same areas of a tank and produce offspring. To all you non southerners and non Texans, a perch is a bluegill or bream or sunfish, (there are many species),not the yellow perch related to the walleye, sauger or saugeye, nor is it related to the crappie, black or white. Nor is it related to the stripped or white bass. As to two species not being able to reproduce, I have to ask about the mule, an interspecies cross between a horse and a donkey. Some of ya'll need to get a book or two. |
