I know there was a thread on scotch a while back, but it doesn't help me much. I am at a loss of what to get my dad for Christmas and thought a nice bottle of scotch would do. He usually drinks Johnny walker (red or black I presume?). I am looking to keep the price under $50-55 for 750 mL if possible, but the size is not set in stone just a nice "Standard". What would the best scotch be for him? A bottle of "Better" johnny walker? Some other brand? Please recommend something for me, I know nothing about scotch. |

This is not an easy question. Some whiskey drinkers will not drink scotch. Some scotch drinkers won't drink anything but their favorite. I personally have never turned my nose up to any type of scotch. I generally stay away from cheap whiskey. If he likes good stuff, I would check a scotch web site and read the descriptions. I like Lagavoulin, but it costs about $95 per bottle Here is some references: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotch_whisky#Understanding_a_Scotch_whisky_label www.scotchwhisky.com/english/about/malts/index.htm |
| I second the single malt idea. If he's a Scotch drinker, he will appreciate the idea. I like Talisker, Oban and Dalwhinnie. Glenlivet and Glenfiddich are also good choices. All can be found in the $50-$75 range. I know it's a little more than you said you wanted to spend, but it is Christmas. |
Not for $50-$55 there, Chief. Personally, I'd spend a little extra and get him a bottle of "The Macallan" 15 year old stuff. Probably more like $70, but it doesn't get much nicer. Macallan 15 at Bevmo |

All Scotch is different. Some is very smoky - if you don't like them, it's like drinking charcoal. Some isn't - if you DO like smoky, it's weak. You could get him a nicer bottle of Walker. I prefer single malt - Aberlour is a good brand, a little more obscure. If you can find the A'bunadh - oh my, that is awesome stuff! |
You wanna see expensive? Here's a deadly serious bottle of scotch: Macalla 30 year |
Thanks for the tip, good to know if I decide to go that route. Maybe I should call his wife and ask her for specifics about his taste, though I'm not sure if she'd know short of confirming what his usual drink is. |
+1 on The Macallan. You can't go wrong w/ a 15yr or an 18yr. |
