I recently read that The District of Columbia has the highest rates for HIV/AIDS in the country and that there is an uproar that not enough money is being spent on "education."

Also.. that the residents of DC do not have adequate access to health care (in order to prevent further infections)

Anyhow... here's my question.
I was assuming that 90%+ of junior high students know the top three causes/transmission of the virus.

Am I incorrect?

And if they already know the cause.. how will more "education" be beneficial?

Most gays don't seem to give a shit.  Some even try to get HIV and some get a perverted kick out of spreading it.  We spend $20 billion a year which is more than we spend on cancer or heart disease research.  Pure politics.

if that's true, that's fucking disgusting.

an easily preventable disease which only effects a tiny fraction of the population gets more funding than potentially fatal diseases, often unpreventable, which will affect the majority of americans at some point during their lives?

fuuuucked up.

I am not touching the elephant in the living room. I do think that it is embarassing that this is happening in the seat of power of the greatest country this planet has seen.
Perhaps the "education" that has been implemented is flawed- I tend to think that the intended audience is not all that interested in the message . Thus the results.

Your assumption would be incorrect.

You're not getting it....

There is an ABUNDANCE of information out there about HIV, how you contract it, and how to avoid it.

That's not the problem.

The problem is that there are a bunch of ignorant, dumb mothersuckers who aren't paying attention to the educational efforts being made. As a result, there are a bunch of ignorant, dumb mothersuckers who don't know how you get HIV because instead of listening to what professionals and educators have tried to teach them, they instead choose to listen to what Pookie 'n them say about it.

You can't fix stupid.

AIDS funding has increased every year since 1993.  Chicago, NY and LA are reopening gay bath houses.  Why not?  It's not their money being wasted.

DC has the highest AIDS/HIV counts because of the lax laws in MD and VA.... err no wait....sorry wrong topic.

Um...I don't think ANYONE except perhaps a very tiny few people with SEVERE MENTAL ILLNESS would "try to get HIV".

You'll probably respond by saying that homosexuality is in itself a mental illness.  In fact, it may be true...but making the general statement that the average gay is cool with contracting HIV is stupid.

It is a scary epidemic.  That's why I added Allion Healthcare to my portfolio.  They specialize in treating people with HIV / AIDS, and let me tell you, there is only going to be more of them.  NASDAQ: ALLI

Might as well make some money in the process, right??

I'm guessing that 100 of the gay community KNOW the cause/method of transmission of HIV - yet some choose not to take necessary precautions.  There is a difference between KNOWING and PRACTICE.

This isn't an issue unique to D.C.   IIRC the city is banned by federal law from using local tax revenues in needle exchange programs.

rates of all STD's are on the increase in the gay community now. BUT. HIV IS NOT A GAY DISEASE.

There is a sub-set of homosexual males called "bug chasers" who seek out opportunities to contract and spread the HIV virus. It is a documented and very real phenomenon.

While the majority of gay men are not bug chasers, homosexual men *do* have the highest instances of risky sexual practices that leads to contraction and spreading of the virus. There are even a number of gay advocacy groups that have publicly lamented the lack of safe sex practices seen today, and theorize that because of advances in treating HIV infections that many don't see it as the death sentence they once did.

That is true, to a degree.  One of the difficult things about AIDS is that it touches a broad spectrum of the things that kill people (infections, cancer, autoimmune issues, etc.)

So basic research "AIDS Funding" often has pretty direct connections to a variety of diseases and conditions, that often connect during AIDS.

It's true that heterosexuals seem hell-bent on being as irresponsible in their sex practices as gay men (as a group...not all individuals) have been....

Last time I remember looking at the numbers black females were the heterosexuals with the highest contraction rate.

Throwing money at it won't help AIDs any more than it will help education.

Amen.

No amount of money or effort can make a worthless bastard into a decent human being. The reality is that people have to care enough about themselves to want something better and make a decision to pursue that goal.

We can't give people a good life. They have to make it for themselves.

f*&^ education because AIDS is a disease that can be spread more than by just bad choices/lifestyles we need to be investing every last cent into finding a vaccen or cure it kills period at somepoint you will come in contact with someones bodily fluid and that someone could be infected. if you have done nothing to deserve it you should not have to suffer from it Know HIV/No HIV

It's basic curve-fitting.  There are a lot more black women than men which works to the tremendous advantage of black men.  There is thus far, far, far more promiscuity in the ghe-tto and far less responsibility for everything from fatherhood to HIV transmission.  If black women saw white men as more likely partners, asshole black men would be stuck without any pussy, but black women don't look outside of the tiny pool of available black men, so those black men can do whatever they want and never pay for the consequences.
