Anybody know how to find the value of an old vehicle that might be worth more as scrap iron?

I have a 1987 F-150 that needs a back window, exaust, tune up and transmission wont go into 5th gear/overdrive. I'm thinking that it might be worth more to a scrap yard or parts yard. It looks like it has been hauling cannon balls for the last 20 years but it starts right up and I use it to haul firewood home and garbage to the dump.

I'd like to know too.  My good friend has an old beater van that has finally given up the ghost and I'd like to let him know if there are good salvage options.

Less than 100 dollars im sure. I hauled one in last year and got 80.00. If the tires are any good take them off because they charge you for the disposal of them.

Most parts yards won't buy cars for parts that are more than ten and sometimes seven years old. Most scrap yards won't give you full price as an individual because you are only going to bring them one car this year or more. Best bet is to look in the paper r Craigslist and call them all and get a quote. In this area I'd say the truck is worth $150 to a "scrapper", and they tow it.

average of say 3500 lbs

I would pay approx 105$ delivered to my facility

A salvage yard that may use some of the parts may pay more

A smaller scrap yard may pay a little less

A larger yard running a shredder will pay a little more

I'd pay that and tow it if it had cats and wasn't too far out. Bigger yards in this area advertise $175 any car, they tow. Bit of a shortage of them these days it seems.

yep

Northern yards running a shredder are pretty hungry right now

Here complete cars are $6.50/100lbs.  I recently got 75/100 for some comletely rusted out vehicles (towed)

ETA: Just saw you are in TN. Where abouts?

If you can cut out the catalytic converter, that may be worth more cash.

Are the tires any good? Sell those.

Can you cut off the back of the truck and make a trailer out of it?

Just ideas.....

Nah, just send the CC my way, I'll give ya $10 for it!
Seriously, cut the CC out - worth enough money for crooks to be stealing them from parked cars.

Dude..... keep that truck.... what you mentioned are non essential stuff, save for the transmission but hey, who needs the 5th gear anyway, offroads should be in the 1/2/3rd.

Fix it up and make it a beater truck or offroad only.

Good luck.

$6/100 or $7/100 with title.
Put it in the  paper for $500 cash. Somebody will buy it for parts or a clean title.
