An acquaintance of mine is claiming she enlisted in the army. I think she's full of shit. she has 2 children under 4 years old, is single, and just recently got a DUI. i dated a chick a while back that got prego while in the army and got discharged(or atleast that's what her story was) is this possible? she's lied to me a couple times, however, i dont know why anyone would lie about this... what say you? |

Single parents can indeed enlist. They're simply required to have someone to take the kids during basic / AIT, and a child care plan after as part of their deployment plan. In most states a first DUI is a traffic offense, not a criminal offense. It might require waiver, but I don't expect so. Never been a recruiter though, so I defer to those who have. Let me ask you though; You can't take her word at face value, she's a drunk driver and has has two kids out of wedlock at an age young enough that enlisting as an E2, E3, whatever is still attractive. Is she really worth hanging out with? |
They must have changed the regs. because I was a recruiter from 93 to 96 and single parents could not enlist. Of course, it could have changed in order to qualify more people. |
I got out in the late '80s, but a very recently seperated E5 tells me that single parents can indeed enlist nowdays. She had to deal with it in her unit. FWIW. |

For the Army. Single parents with any type of custody(full, partial, etc) are NOT able to enlist RA. They CAN enlist in the USAR with the gaining commander's permission, and a completed family care plan. The DUI will of course require a waiver once probation/fines/classes are complete. There might also be a waiting period with the offense. Not a current recruiter so I'm not sure about the waiting period. For recruiting purposes, the Army National Guard is not associated with the Army. Lord knows what their quals are? |
Yep. It's no problem while you're in. The biggest problem is getting in. When I was a recruiter from 01-04 neither RA or USAR could be single parents and join. That has changed to allow USAR single parents to join. |
. IF you got pregnant then, it was your option if you wanted to stay in or get discharged. That was in 2000. I'm not sure if things have changed since then.
