The background...

I have wireless set up from a host location beaming hi-speed about 3/4 of a mile away to me. It comes in my house through a bridge then to an AP and wireless throughout the house.

On the other end there is a computer running wireless and 1 on a wire.

The problem.  It locks up at odd times for no reason.  To the point the whole set on the other end needs to be rebooted.  I had problems in the past and ended up changing on my end to a static IP addy.  I am sure the computers on the other end are still allowing theirs to be assigned.  When I get locked out I can still get an IP addy whether I change it manual or allow it to be assigned.  I am connected to the router but it will pass 1 packet every 5 minutes or so.  I am not sure if it is the router on the other end or the cable modem that is locking up.  when it locks up for me it does for them as well.

At one point I thought it was happening when one of them were connecting but, I have checked and they weren't.  The other issues I still haven't encrypted the signal.  I know I need to to do it but, anyone have an idea what is causing this?

All the big talk I have said above is about the max I know about IT world so go easy on me and type slowly.

Thanks.

Since many specifics are being left out, here's a similar scenario I recently faced.

Given:
Cable internet service provider is Comcast.
Modem is a leased Motorola Surfboard SB5101.

My modem would lock up and / or drop offline at random.  When I logged into my modem via its built-in web browser (http://192.168.100.1), I got the following messages immediately prior to malfunction:

20:26:57 4-Error E107.0 SW upgrade Failed after download - Incompatible SW file
20:26:54 6-Notice E102.0 SW Download INIT - Via Config file d11_m_sb5100_silver_c01.cm

I Googled the file name and came up with several hits.  Apparently, I was not alone.

Fishing around those hits, I found that Comcast in their infinite wisdom was trying to cram the wrong firmware down my modem's throat.  If you note the file name, "d11_m_sb5100_silver_c01.cm", you will notice that that's a Motorola Surfboard model number.  It was nice of them to send me firmware for an SB5100, just too bad that I had an SB5101.

First, I went to Comcast's online technician chat.  That didn't go so well, when the "tech" said I should "clear cookies and dump cache" and blamed the problem on the one Vista machine on my network.  Funny thing is, that the cable modem is independent of the computer, let alone the operating system.  I should have told her that I was running Red Hat Linux.

About a week later, I called Comcast--on a telephone.  That ended up much worse.  The immigrant on the other end asked me if my modem was plugged in and just read her script.  When she told me to disconnect my router for 24 hours and call back if the problem persisted, I told her something to the effect to pack sand where sand should never be packed.  Immediately, I got onto the Comcast Online Chat rigmarole.  Here's how that went:

Joseph > 2007-09-07 20:26:57 4-Error E107.0 SW upgrade Failed after download - Incompatible SW file
2007-09-07 20:26:54 6-Notice E102.0 SW Download INIT - Via Config file d11_m_sb5100_silver_c01.cm

Edgar > Hello Joseph_, Thank you for contacting Comcast Live Chat Support. My name is Edgar. Please give me one moment to review your information.

Edgar >&nb
sp;How may I assist you today?

Joseph_ > My Internet keeps dropping out because Comcast keeps pushing firmware for SB5100 modems out to my SB5101 modem.

Edgar > Really are you sure comcast is doing that?

Joseph_ > The SB5100 firmware is not compatible, thus my modem freezes until I power-cycle it.

Joseph_ > Yes, I'm sure.

<
b>Joseph_ > Google the firmware filename, and there's thousands of stories like mine

Joseph_ > http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/r18806275-Connectivity-Comcast-sb5101-connectivity

Joseph_ > http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r18413782-SB5101-Config-Files~start=40

Joseph_ > In essence, I need my modem to be re-provisioned.  See the second link, replies #6 & #10.

Edgar > Ok my support is not being helpful and he's just
saying that all we do is push the firmware that the manufacturers tell us to push, and he's suggesting you swap your modem. But hold on I'll see if I can reprovision it.

Joseph_ > OK, thanks.

Edgar > This shows you have a sm5120...

Edgar > *sb5120

Joseph_ > ???

Joseph_ > I still have the box the modem ca
me in.  It's in my hand.  Both the box and the half-dozen labels it came with say SB5101

Joseph_ > The serial number is:  154558606235046803031030

Edgar > What's the HFC MAC ID?

Joseph_ > HFC MAC address:  00:16:b5:2d:4f:d6

Edgar > Located on the bottom of the modem

Edgar > ack I was looking at the totally
 wrong modem my bad

Joseph_ > No problem

Edgar > One moment please.

Joseph_ > ok

Edgar > Ok your service is probably going to disconnect.

Edgar > Just keep this window open ok

Joseph_
 > OK.  Will do

Edgar > And once it disconnects, wait about 60 seconds, if you're not back online, unplug the power to your modem, wait 10 seconds, plug it back in.

Joseph_ > Roger that.

Joseph_ > I'm guessing that this came from your end:  2007-09-07 21:57:06 6-Notice I401.0 TLV-11 - unrecognized OID

Edgar > welcome back

Edgar > I have no idea what that is sorry

Edgar > I'm guessing that was me removing your internet services

Joseph_ > It's still doing the "SW Download INIT - Via Config file d11_m_sb5100_silver_c01.cm" deal

Joseph_ > It didn't drop out as a result, but. . .

Joseph_ > If I did turn this modem in (it's leased from Comcast), would I get a different model or would it be another SB5101 and bring me back
to square one?

Edgar > You'd get a different model

Edgar > One sec I'll give you a link that will tell you exactly where to do that

Joseph_ > OK.

Edgar > lol k theres one

Edgar > http://www.comcast.com/Customers/ContactUs/PaymentCenter/LocatePaymentCenter.ashx?Filter=Equipment_Exchanged|028_Modem

Joseph_ > About 6 months ago, I had a problem with intermittent service.  I turned in a 4-year old RCA modem and got an SB5101.  This is my 3rd SB5101, since it was thought to be bad modems back then.  It turned out my neighbor's house was feeding noise back into the tap.

Joseph_ > Usually when I go to the Customer Care Center in Auburn, WA, they just pull another new in box modem off of the pile.  It seems like luck of the draw.

Edgar > I'm sorry to hear that.. this time explain the issue to them, and how that is exactly why you need a different model.

Joseph_ > I suppose I can try that.

Joseph_ > Is there a way I can receive a credit, since I've been dealing with this issue for a few weeks now?

Joseph_ > And I have to go back to the Center in Auburn?

Edgar > Yes I'm sorry.

Joseph_ > OK

Edgar > But I'll give you a $40 credit for the trouble cuz you've been a good sport smile that ok?

Joseph_ > Thank you!

Edgar > No problem. Is there anything else I can assist you with?

Joseph_ > In that case, I guess that's it.  I'll hit up Auburn on Monday and try getting a new modem.

Edgar

Check all physical cable (CATV / RG-59 / RG-9) connections in entire house as well as check the splitter(s).  Last Spring, I had a similar problem.  The tech verified all connectors then checked the tap (amplifier) in my front yard.  In digital communications, it is understood that there will be some erroneous bits in any given data stream.  That is the bit error rate.  The BER coming off of the tap (before entering the house) was fluctuating wildly.  The problem was being caused by noise being back-fed into the tap by a neighbor.  Noise can come from faulty connectors, splitters or even electronic equipment such as TVs.

Enjoy dealing with Comcast on this hokey set-up you've got going on.  On the bright side, your buddy gets to deal with these monkeys directly.

If Century Arms got into the telecom industry, they would be called Comcast.

The modem is losing it's timing, according to the log files.  I'm sure you'll figure that out three routers later like I did.
