A couple days ago I was kidding around with my daughter and came up with:

If Sally is confronted by three muggers and draws her Springfield Armory XD-9 loaded with a 16-round magazine, how many rounds will she have left after running a Mozambique Drill on each thug?

She thought it was pretty funny (and came up with the right answer!).

Anybody else have suggestions for test questions?

7 rounds, plus what ever extra mags she has!

Actually, if she had one in the pipe, she would have 8 rounds remaining in the pistol.

Well, it was loaded with a 16 round magazine. He didn't say it had one in the chamber plus the 16 rounds. I would think Sally just put a 16 round magazine in, chambered a round and was good to go. 1 in chamber + 15 remaining in magazine = 16 rounds.

And this is assuming she didn't miss, or reload. (The answer would be 16 if it was me)

every monday at the action shooting match I do this stuff all the time.  Once the scenario is stated, I have to figure out how many rounds expended and where I will reload.

Granted, in a firefight, I probably won't split hairs on rounds expended, but it is good to quickly size up a situation and have a "feel" for when your gun might be empty so that it doesn't come as a surprise.

PS, and I teach math at a High school...  I wonder what kid of heat I would get for a firearm related story problem...  Right now we are going over rational functions... "your reload time is modeled by the following function.  identify any horizontal asymptotes and interpret their meaning in context of the problem...  "
