After shooting my uncle's 6mm last weekend and shooting a few friends bolt actions, I'm looking for a nice bolt action rifle.  I'm pretty ignorant to the differences/benefits of various actions, and other benefits or pitfalls of specific rifles.  I'm not really sure what's too big or too small, etc.  I'm mainly wanting to punch paper or plink steal, at a distance of 300 yards or so tops.  However, most shooting will be 100-200 for the local ranges.

A good friend is offering me a Rem 700 PSS with Badger rings/base, Jewel trigger, bipod and a Visonnetweb scope for around 1300, which looks like a decent deal for the money invested.  Not really sure I need a 308 though.

Any links to picking the rifle or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Go for it.

Or if you really like to use irons, get an old surplus rifle.

I like irons, but I'd like to expand and get something with an optic on it for first.

I think an older surplus rifle is pretty high up on my "to buy" list... but thats even more research I'm not too far into yet.

I think a .223 would be perfect for your application. Accuracy and plenty accurate out to those distances. I have a Savage 10FP in .223 and it is wild accurate. Great gun. The Savage synthetic stock leaves something to be desired, so I swapped it for a $100 Bell and Carlson Duramax. The new Remington 700 SPS Varmint is supposed to be good for the pirce from what I've heard. These are both bull barrel guns of course, which may or may not be what you are looking for. Don't overlook Savage rifles, they are by far the best accuracy for your dollar IMHO.

If you are just wanting to shoot paper out to 300 yards, go with a .223 due to ammo cost.

And take a look at a Savage 10FP.  It's the best bang for your buck that you will find.

Buy it and reload your own ammo

WTH is a "Visonnetweb scope"?

What about the 110FP?  That was suggested too, any benefit to the longer action?

http://visionnetweb.com/ some guy who hits the DFW fun shows and is somewhat popular around here.  No experience to speak of, but apparently (word of mouth) decent stuff for the price.

Thats my plan. I hadn't really thought of 223 for this, but if it seems appropriate I'll save on reloading.  I think I have about 1000rds of once fired Blackhills brass.

I'll probably pick up a few books on reloading in the next week or so, to go along with my other searches.

Only benefit is that they are chambered in rounds that are longer than .308.  Savage is currently cambering the 110FP in 25-06 and .300 Win Mag.

I wouldn't waste my money on one of those scopes.  I learned years ago to not waste money on cheap scopes, especially cheap never heard of brand scopes.

Also head over to the Precision Rifles section here, lots of good info there.

If you are going to only punch holes in paper and at those ranges..I suggest something in 22LR. 200 yard out on a windy day with this cartridge will teach you how to read the wind.

Otherwise...there are an awful lot of really good rifles out there.

Unmodified Rifles that I would avoid are:
Remington
Winchester

Otherwise if the rifle has been blue printed, pillar bedded and the trigger has been worked over...and the rifle is under 1000 dollars, then either one should be fine.

Stock Rifles to look at:
Savage
CZ
Tikka
Sako
There are a bunch more..but you can get good value with CZ, Tikka, and Savage.

Semi-Custom Rifles:
Dakota

Single Shot Bolt Action Rifles built on a Stolle Panda or a Hall Action. (Lija makes good barrels)

So are you saying the Savage needs work to be as nice/accurate as the 700?

So I take it you wouldn't ever hunt with it then?  If that could be a possibility I wouldn't get a .223.

I have a 700P in .308 and I love it. Ive only shot it at 250 yards but its far more accurate than me (which I guess isnt saying much ).

Im actually about to start reloading .308, A buddy of mine is confident that with the right load, the 26 inch barrel will make it out to 800 yards no problem.

Possibly, I was thinking of that last night considering caliber selection.   More than likely I won't, but I hate ruling things like that out initially.

Buy a good heavy barreled .223 for shooting a paper and small varmints and then when you decide that you want to hunt, buy a good hunting rifle in 30-06.
