Does anyone else think that tipping has gotten out of control. I think it's now "expected" that you tip. Everywhere you go people expect you to tip them. You pick a pizza up and they have a tip jar on the counter, you go out to a restaurant where you must valet your car and you are expected to tip, you walk down the steet and homeless people expect you to tip them money for being homeless. The bad thing about this is that customer service is getting worse. It seems like the more you are expected to tip the more idiots you have to deal with. I'm all for tipping for good service but unless the service is worthy of my money i'm like the soup nazi of tipping. Don't people get paid a base wage and tips are for going above and beyond what you expect from a service? I'm sick of throwing my money away to people who don't deserve it, especially when businesses ad the tip into your bill. Now I'm not some cheap and miserable bastard that doesn't like to spend money because when I do tip I tip very well (at least by my standards, my barber does a good job so I'll drop an extra $20 on the guy). Am I the only who is sick of being expected to pay for sub-par service?

Here's the one that really gets me:

You grab some lunch and it comes to $15 or so and pay with a $100 bill and then the server asks me if I need change back. This automatically = $0 for a tip for just being that stupid.

I do think the display of tip jars has become more frequent although unmerited.

I went to a restaurant in NJ for a take out order.  Right in the T/O menu is says a 15% service charge will be added to T/O orders.  When I picked it up, the owner asked me if I wanted to leave a tip!

Par service = 15%
Better goes up and sub par goes down.
Take out = $1 if she's decent looking
Asking for change = sub par - I hate this also.

I have noticed this also. I understand that everyone needs to make a living, but Damn! They take it for granted instead of earning it.

If you really wanna see something rediculous, go out to eat with a waitess and see how they tip... they have this philosophy amongst themselves that they must tip each other rediculously... I once went out to eat with this waitress chick who insisted we tip $75.00 for a $100.00 meal.

Wait staff make about 2 bucks an hour and rely on the tip for the bulk of their wages. That's not to say tip good for lousy service. Now the tip jar at Starbucks.

If they are working for $2.00 an hour, time to go back to school and get a real paying job.  Having said that, I do appreciate good service and do tip 15% and sometimes more for exceptional service.  No tip in the jar and if I take out, absolutely no tip or I do no business there.

I think 20% is out of line in most cases. Does the owner make 20% off of food? You know, the guy who took a chance and invested his money.15% is fine for most instances. If I have a 100 bill and give 15 the just made 15 + plus there base for the hour. Not to mention what they make from others that hour I'm rarely in a place more than an hour if the service is good. They wont do that for 8 hours in most places. If they want an 8 hours pay at that rate get a better job. I dont want to hear about how hard it is. Like I said you rarely work 8 in a row. Its not that hard to begin with. I worked in a place in high school that didnt allow tips. You got minimum or rasies if you did goodwork.

If I have food delivered (pizza, Chinese) I tip.

If I eat in, I tip at 15% and go to 20% fairly easily, but if I have an extraordinary time I have stiffed a waitress (45 minute wait for bad food). Only happened once, but I will do it.

If I order food for carryout I never tip. I don't buy that the counter people at Dominos deserve a tip for simply taking the order and handing it to me when I show up.

One time a local restaurant tried to put it on a credit card and I didn't catch it until I got home, and I went back and made them credit me.

I was just in Orlando and took a lot of cabs to various places. What a racket that was! 2 mile cab ride, $10-$15. Airport? $50.

I usually tip cabbies if the rates are reasonable, but in a town that is a clip joint for tourists, no way.

Haircuts? If it is the $14 haircut place, I'll give them a couple of bucks. I have no idea what I would do if I were to go to a $50 barbershop; it has never happened.

Sorry!

I tip according to service only, bad service means bad tip it's that simple. What i'm sick of seeing is a tip jar on every counter in every store here in NYC. Even Bodegas put out a tip jar now , wtf i'm supposed to leave a tip because you gave me change for buying  2 or 3 items.

The most I will tip is $10 and thats only if the waiter keeps my drink past the middle mark. If I have to sit with no pop I won't tip at all

So, a server has never handed you a check presenter (the cheap leather booklet) with your bill inside, and you have never returned it to them with your cash inside? Alot of servers find it rude or intrusive to open the book in front of the guest, so they ask if you need change, not knowing if you have card, exact change, or if you need it.
