| Is there any excuse not to get them right? |

Hey, It's part of the language now. Clip = Magazine. I know it's the wrong word, but...shit...what are you going to do? You yourself can make sure you use the correct terminology but the newsrooms, Hollywood, and even other gun owners are still gonna say "Clip." Kevin "Meh..." |
Umm...educate the masses? |
you might want to start with the "a tec-9 is not an UZI machinegun" lecture first. |
Good luck with that. They don't know what the difference between a bullet and a cartridge is. Or the shoulder thing that goes up. I doubt many sheeple will commit to memory the word "magazine" because it gets firearm purist's panties all wadded up. Face that the fact that magazine and clip are now interchangeable in common discourse. I'm not saying it's right, I'm just sayin'... Kevin "Sad but true..." |

I DO NOT CARE. Lots of folks refer to their vehicle as a car when it's really a truck (PT Cruiser, for example, is a truck as defined by the US Gov't). Bostonians refer to Cuba as Cuber, and everybody still knows what they mean. It's funny as hell, but you know what they mean. Calling a mag a clip doesn't make it so--but it also doesn't matter. The nomenclature is inconsequential. When people say 'clip', you know what they're talking about. Frankly, in the parlance of our times, 'clip' is more widely used and therefore more widely recognized by the general population. I get a chuckle out of the folks whose panties are all bunched up over this one. |
Because it's vitally important that everybody know the difference right, I mean really, think of the carnage that would occur if the masses weren't taught proper terminology, there might be...um no, that won't happen... I know, somebody could, hmm probably unlikely. there's that one thing, no no that wouldn't happen either..fuckit, not all that important I guess.

i get it right but i don't really care if others don't. anyone who calls a mag a clip i just dismiss out of hand as an ignorant fucktard unworthy of my time and useful only as a footstool. besides, i think it sounds cooler to yell, "toss me a mag!" than "toss me a clip!". |
I think this is really the issue. Not that it matters whether somebody uses the right term, but whether they are really thinking about it at all. Only people with their minds turned off persist in their ignorance when corrected by someone who knows better. OTOH, 'clip' vs 'mag(azine)' does help identify people who are not that well-versed in firearms, which is nice. |
|
If someone else says clip, I'm not going to correct them or cringe. I know, without any confusion, what they are talking about. If someone uses the correct terminology, I use it as somewhat of barometer of firearm knowledge. This person may know a bit more about shooting than the average Joe. |
|
The incorrect use of the term clip, from others, does not bother me at all. I now what they mean. That is the objective in all communication, to transfer information. That said, I am more exact in my use of terminology. It does help to identify those who are not well versed in firearms. Everything a person says provides an indication of their intelligence, knowlege, and experience. Wow, that almost sounds snooty.... I say what I mean, and likewise, mean what I say. |
| Words mean things, get it right or look like an uneducated ape, it's your decision. It's no different in any business or hobby, can't get the terms right then don't expect to be able to communicate effectively with your peers, or get any real help from those that know more than you. |
Yes, some people don't know what the hell they are talking about. Ex. Guy: I will carry a .48 super S&W when I get commisioned. Me: A revolver? ![]() Guy: No, it uses clips. Or Guy: I'm gonna put custom ivory grips with a gold scorpion on my glock. Me: I'll be back. ![]() |
+1 When dealing with others in the Military, hell yes. When dealing with the public, I don't care. It is an indicator of weapons knowledge for sure. |
|
"Clip" and "magazine" are shibboleths, words used to distinguish friend from foe. Generally, the anti-rights people say "clip," and the pro-rights people say "magazine." The Feinsteins and Schumers of the world say "clip," so whenever I hear that word, I assume "foe." (Or at best, illiterate.) Yes, I know what people mean when they say "clip," "irregardless," or "I could care less," but that doesn't mean that I don't make a mental note that I am dealing with a mentally lazy person. As Jeff Cooper said, sloppy language is a symptom of sloppy thinking. |
-1 Here are so examples of your mental laziness...now what do you say? How about this, "People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones." I know what you meant so I guess I'll just treat you as an "anti-gun person". |
