Hey so I got me a basic sword cut out of one piece of metal that was once the blade (which was real) of one of those flea market swords (whose handle was just a threaded piece of shit covered with wood) and now I need to install handguard pomel and wrap the handle. WAs an ornamental english long sword, now its a gladius style shortsword. Anyone got good suggestions for handle wrap? This is my second one, the first one was inserted at its base into a split iron pipe and welded, the pipe was filled with molten lead and original demon head pomel from ornamental version was simply threaded onto the end. It has a square katana like handguard made from the floor panels of a scrapped willys jeep, bought as thick as a 20 page term paper. On this one i went one piece, and will use a similar hand guard, what i need is good advice for both material and process of handle wrap. After that I probaly use a lugnut for a pomel and sharpen her up....will still need a sheath though, any advice there would be helpful too. Tis pakistani steel btw |
| Search out ANY books by Jim Hrisoulas, his Bladesmith series are exellent references on the craft, and do a web search on Bob Egnath(R.I.P.) He was a great guy, and freely offered his advice to anyone who called. He was knowledgeable on every phase of knife and swordmaking, as well as handle and scabbard making too. His catalog was a small reference PACKED with tips and tricks for knife and sword making. It even had detailed instructions for Japanese tsukamaki ( traditional Japanese sword handle wrapping) I had a Katanna that he made and I'm so sorry that I sold it. He used to make all the blades for Bugei trading. I believe that Paul Chen now makes their swords. Hope that helps. |
