There's a local gun shop that I go to 2-3 times a week, I have all of my guns transfered through there and also buy a number of guns from them. At times they need some counter help and I've "wroked" there twice for them and they've paid me with AR mags and took a nice chunk of change off of a HK pistol. Now it's come to the point where I may be needed there once a week and I'm not sure what to ask them to give me as far as payment goes, I will not accept cash from them as they are a small shop and could use all of the revenue that they can get but I will accept store credit as payment. My work schedule is very flexible and I can easily work there 3 times if not more a month. So do you see a diffrence in receiving store credit vs a normal paycheck, obviously they won't have to pay taxes for my "pay" but they'd still be losing inventory and not receiving any income for it. I want to help the shop out as much as I can but I really don't want to work for free. Also if we did settle on a store credit per hour amount, how much do you think I should ask for? I was thinking $10 a hour in store credit would be far but what say you? I make over twice that amount at my regular job and I do have experience in working in a gun store. |

$10 an hour sounds fair. I wouldn't spend too much time feeling bad about it. They're probably glad they have dependable help who's willing to do that. If it's an under the table gig, then they probably appreciate that, instead of having to worry about the taxes, liabilities, etc. |
While you and the store owner will have to come to an agreement, that sounds like a good deal for the owner. Remember that there are costs other than salary to having a paid employee, including FICA, so the owner benefits also. |
