What is the difference between a direct gas impingement system like the AR-15 platform and a direct gas blowback system in .22-cal converted AR's?

gas from the tube pushes back to unlock the chamber on the .223. 22 cal is just held closeed with spring pressure. and the pressure of the gas pushes the case out..

as I understand it, in a direct gas system a gas-tube redirects some of the gas back into the action to cycle the bolt.  Where as in the direct gas blow-back it's the pressure of the gas in the chamber that cycles the bolt.
