How can you tell if a product has a patent? Can I have a friend weld me together some shooting target stands w/o having to worry about if the target stand we are going to replicate has a patent?

As long as you aren't planning on selling them, I wouldn't worry about it.
If you are planning on starting a business selling a "new" type of target stands, you can pay a patent attorney to do a search for you.

I think a target stand would be the least of my worries patent wise.
