Not a pick up line, been married for twenty years and happy with it, always glad
to help out a new shooter, and maybe convert her to up grade to an EBR.

You got to try a .40 cal S&W; good balance of stopping power and firepower.  A Glock 23 or a sub-compact Glock 27 would do just fine - IMHO.

Good luck shopping and don't forget to invest in some lessons at your local range before packing.

Find a range that offers beginning firearms courses and take one. After that, become a member and rent different handguns to see what you like. Then take a CCW-specific course and apply for your permit. You may also want to talk some guys from the TX Hometown forums into organizing a range day where you can shoot their stuff---shouldn't be too difficult, considering your age and your screenname . Many members here are great teachers and handle newbie questions very well.

GET SOMETHING IN 9mm (I'd recommend a G19 or 26) or Smith M&P 9

cheap ammo should equal more practice

Don't listen to the "caliber nazi" idiots here

ALL PISTOL calibers suck, just learn to make good hits with the 9

i bought a glock 22 .40 to carry but it was to big. so i bought a XD40 semi compact to carry now and its much easier to conceal. im 6 ft and about 200lbs and i thing the xd is a better gun to hide

We gotta teach ya what the quote button is.  It's like the reply button, but shows the post you're replying to. Like this one lol.

Glocks rock.  There is no gun out there MORE reliable, but some are as reliable.  The angle of the grip compared to the slide is annoying for some people.  And the grips are rather thick because they hold what's called a double stack magazine.  Meaning that rounds go in almost side by side so they can hold more vs a single stack that puts rounds one on top of another and holds less.

The glock also has what's called a low bore axis.  Meaning the middle of the barrel, and thus the sites, are closer to your hand making it more stable and easier to shoot faster for some people.

Ya my wife had trouble limp-wristing a .40 caliber glock I had, bought a G19 and never happened again.

There is no reason in owning a .45 or even a 9mm if you cannot hit what you are aiming at.

I took my wife the the range and the first pistol she ever fired in her life was a Glock 19, and it scared her a lot. Since then though she has become more comfortable with firearms and has worked her way up the caliber tree.

holy crap, I see this isn't the first time this subject has been broached.

To the OP's issue, what is the material difference between, say, a Springfield XD and a Glock of equivalent calibre?

+1

If you have a friend (or make one in the hometown forum) you can save time and money by trying their pistols. If someone wanted to try a variety of different pistols in the  process of deciding which one to buy (and was willing to buy their own ammo), I'd certainly be happy to take them to the range with me.

+ 1, Already offered, TXNablergirl, if you want to shoot an AR or a Glock 19,
My daughter and me will be at the Wells shooting range tomorrow around 3PM.

Get somebody that knows their shit teach you the basics, which should not be hard being your a lady, right, go to the range, rent a G19 or MP9 and they will be jumping to teach you

Be weary though, far too many people in this field are posers who don't know shit and will blow smoke up your ass.

Do you have anyone in your family that carries?

If not,

I would consider going onto the "hometown forum", the button is on the top bar on this site, and go to your state, and just ask for someone to go shoot with you and teach you the basics, they are VERY friendly folks.

Take a basic instructions class. Then go to the range and rent some firearms and ammunition. Start out with a .22, and go up calibers as you are comfortable. Once you find a gun caliber you are comfortable with purchase a gun.

The most improtant statement I have read in a long time. Seek out a professional that will and can train you the proper and safe way to use, handle and carry a handgun. After your training, I would then recommend starting the process to obtaining a concealed weapons(handgun) permit.

My wifes gun of choice is either her Glock 23 (.40 S$W) or my Sig Sauer C3 compact 1911 (.45 ACP). She has never had any problems associated with limp wristing or any malfunctions while firing either weapons. She even enjoys shooting my M-N 1891/30.

First of all, welcome to the forum.

The guys have given you some good advice on how to go about this.  There are some good ranges in the D/FW area that have training courses.  Here's the link: Area Ranges.  The Dallas crew is a great group of people, and they're always willing to help out a newbie.  You'll have to come to our next shoot so you can get a feel for different things.

By the way, check out the Women's Forum here on the site.  We have a pretty good group of women here, and those of us who shoot will be more than happy to help you in any way.

1st off, welcome to the site

i'm guessing you are a woman (if not, excuse me); if so, check out these old topics:
www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=5&f=4&t=48246

basically: begin by picking a firearm that fits YOU; one that you are comfortable shooting AND carrying and of a suitable carry caliber (9mm/.38spl and up)

after that, seek professional training or at least practice

LOL I want it mostly to carry in the car

When you need a gun, you need it here and NOW!

In your car is useless.

Yeah, that is refered to "dead man's gun"

+1, this is one of the misconceptions about how deadly force works. If something happens while you are in your car, 95% of the time your best choice is to drive away from, or over, the threat. If something happens while you aren't in the car and you have time to go to the car, then is almost certainly is not a threat worthy of deadly force. If a serious threat comes around while you are walking about, then you will certainly be killed/raped/robbed/whatever Mr. Bad Guy had planned before you can get to the gun in your car.

I also kind of disagree on some of the training requests. You should be comfortable with drawing and shooting your gun before you carry, but you don't have to make it to a big fancy tactical training course first. Yeah, those courses are good and you should get to one when you can, but very few threats really require high-end shooting and reloading skills that you would get by going to them. If you wait until you are perfectly trained, then you will never carry. You're better off IMHO carrying when you're pretty good. The difference between having a gun and not having a gun is immense; the difference between this kind of gun and that kind of gun and all of the various training courses is pretty small. I know I'd rather have the protection now then wait until I'm at some particular level of training.
